Most school districts in the greater Kansas City metro region have required students and staff to wear masks inside schools to begin the academic year. Schools in more rural areas have often taken a mask-recommended approach.

Dr. Kenny Southwick, executive director of the Cooperating School Districts of Greater Kansas City could not predict a date for masking recommendations to change.

"As vaccinations go up, and cases go down, I think you'll see a revisit of that," Southwick said.
