A Missouri law prohibiting state and local police from enforcing certain federal gun laws has already undermined drug and weapons investigations, the U.S. Department of Justice argued in documents filed Wednesday in Cole County Circuit Court.
Missouri's 'Second Amendment Sanctuary' Law Could Complicate Police Efforts to Solve Gun Crimes
In June, Missouri Governor Mike Parson signed the Second Amendment Preservation Act at a gun store in the Kansas City suburb of Lee's Summit. The law, which takes full effect on August 28, essentially prohibits police in the state from enforcing federal gun restrictions. Agencies whose officers violate the statute can be fined $50,000.
Justice Department Says Missouri's New 2nd Amendment Law Is 'Legally Invalid'
The Justice Department on Wednesday weighed in on Missouri's law barring enforcement of federal gun laws, flatly declaring it "legally invalid." In a so-called statement of interest filed with the Cole County court that's considering the law's legality, the department urged the court to block enforcement of the law.
