Council Debates New Directives For Kansas City Police

Credit to KICK-ASS TKC READERS who sent word to us LAST WEEK on the topic of sketchy legislation from council.

Apparently, the idea of police acting like social workers instead of bringing violent offenders to justice didn't go over very well today in committee.

KMBC: City Hall resolution calls for Kansas City police to prevent crime first, then catch criminals

City councilwoman Heather Hall joined the hearing remotely but said she is uncomfortable with this.

"It seems a little too late, or a little bit not enough after a couple of weeks ago when we decided to have zero conversation about a $42 million reduction," Hall said.

She was referring to the $42 million that City Hall shifted from the police budget, which has triggered a lawsuit. The committee chair supports the resolution but is skeptical.

"I don't see that our police department ever listens to anything that this council says," said Katheryn Shields, a city councilwoman.
