Overland Park Announces Release Of 2018 Police Report On Deadly Teen Shooting

Like it or not, faith based & community activists deserve credit if only because without the public pressure they're exerting, this disclosure of deets about the deadly shooting of a teen would be unlikely.

The incident was investigated by the Johnson County Officer Involved Shooting Investigation Team, consisting of law enforcement officers out of other jurisdictions in Johnson County, according to the city.

The purpose of the investigation was to help the Johnson County District Attorney in making a decision about whether the use of force was lawful and whether any crime was committed.

The police department receives a copy of the investigation report when it’s complete.

The city said over the last three years, the police department has received numerous requests for the report and consistently denied those requests.

For the three years since the incident, the Albers family and others have continuously called for transparency to include the release of the Officer Involved Shooting Investigation Team report.

The city is currently being sued for the release of the information.

“As a result of this ongoing discussion, misinformation has been circulated resulting in a serious erosion of public trust over this period of time,” the city said in a news release. “Due to the unique circumstances presented in this case to include the challenge of the public confidence in city officials and law enforcement related to this matter, and in light of the current litigation, the City has decided to release the report that is in our possession.”

  1. if this wouldn't have been a white kid from OP who has parents with money, they would have swept this under the rug a long time ago.

  2. It helps it's in JoCo, a favorite target of the KC Star. Whenever they get a chance to point out a negative issue in JoCo, they jump all over it like the maggots on a carcass they are.

  3. Sadly this kid would have violently hurt himself or someone else in the future.

The parents should be mad at the mental health professionals for not providing their son the right meds to calm his behavior.

  4. The parents should blame themselves for not ensuring the safety of their kid and others around him. No doubt much of his mental illness has something to do with the way he was patented. I think that’s become obvious with this whole shit show of blaming the Chief of Police after getting paid a large chunk of money for their aon’s death. Stop paying people money to go away. Once you do, guaranteed the unprincipled ones like Sheila will be back for more using whatever means necessary.

  6. ^^^I doubt that his mental instability had anything to do with the way he was reared. Most likely it was there from birth. He was a Russian (Ukranian?) orphan - his birth parents may have been more than a bit unstable.

That said, Mom and Dad clearly goofed when they called cops with guns to handle their violent son.

    1. That may be true, but I don’t doubt that the apparent instability of his adoptive parents didn’t contribute to his emotional instability as a teen. One does not negate the other.

  8. The teen was not unarmed he was armed with a vehicle and tried to run the police down.

  9. All the officer had to do was step out of the way.

  10. None of this matters.
    He's still dead.

  11. It matters when you have a mob calling for the Police Chief's head because the parents wanted to sweep their kid's mental illness under the rug and leave him at home with the keys to a lethal weapon.

  12. Everybody's brain is wired differently. Just like automobile engines, one in 10,000 brains malfunction.

Unless it is a Chrysler, then one in ten.
