TKC Told You So: Kansas City Buck O'Neil Bridge Renderings Disappoint Everyone

Local reaction to this work in progress was overwhelmingly negative and it looks like money saving minimalism has disheartened Kansas City amateur urban planners.

Proof . . .

Fox4KC: Many, including Kansas City mayor, not happy with new design of Buck O'Neil Bridge

Money line after a "virtual tour" didn't convince locals . . .

"The design drew criticism from Lucas on Twitter. He’s grateful to see the project moving but said he wants to retain as much of the old bridge as possible."

Sadly, given the COVID cash crunch planners aren't even pretending to care about public criticism and this low-rent bridge will remove an iconic structure and replace it with a generic one.

Developing . . .

Bridge is a bridge.

Sorry but no money for touristy junk anymore.

Architecture is elitist.

That bridge really says black baseball player.

Sure Lucas wants something more expensive than we can afford, typical dimwit dumbass.

Hopefully this doesn't turn KC into a complete aesthetic hellscape.

Oops, too late.

The favelas of Rio are more soul enriching.

You wanna know why the highway of death has stop lights instead of bridges?

Because that dumbass cleave spent all the bridge money for the entire highway on fancy pretty bridges close to downtown that’s why. He completely fucked up an entire highway because he’s tupid and Lucas is the same way.

I see that this new design will eliminate the problem of being shaken down at 6th and Broadway by panhandlers when wanting to continue north when on I-35 north. Nothing but positives in my humble opinion.

Nice clean modern design. Change name back to Broadway Bridge as geography dictates and all will be up to date in Kansas City.

It is and always will be as you go east on the river; The Broadway, Heart of America and Paseo bridges.

Good memory on 11:40.

Nice to see REAL Kansas City show some pride!

Even Brutalism had its charms, this is just utter horseshit design.

neato, a reference to brutalism

Lucas wants to put together a "group" like the 18th and Vine "management team" to involve "the community" on how other people's money is spent.
The bridge would then take 20 years to design and build and would come in around $50 million over budget, and how most of the money had been spent would never be uncovered.
Pandering and insider dealing at their best!

Glad to see Q still has time to ignore black on black crime.

It's a bridge. If it's sturdy, can handle the traffic, and crosses the river, who cares what it looks like.

Politicians are genetically incapable of competency.

Just think how many “black businesses” will get paid for doing nothing, quadrupling the price and it will still end up a perfectly good plain ass bridge.... but all the koloreds will be fat and nappy wit dey Escalades and white bitches!!!

10:49 is a good example of the uninformed commenter here. The reason 71 Hwy has stoplights has NOTHING to do with the cost of the bridges. Is was a compromise with the urban neighborhoods that would be bisected by the new highway. The idea was that "at-grade" stoplights would make it feel less like a chasm between the two sides now separated. It was a failure, and all it did was screw up traffic, but it had nothing to do with the cost of the bridges.

The new bridge design is meh, but that's not what I've heard most locals complaining about. The layout of the bridge, in order to remove the need to exit at Broadway to continue south and to keep the old bridge in place while the new one is built, will require the destruction of a dozen additional buildings on the west edge of the River Market. It feels like the destruction caused by the construction of the north side of the I-70 loop and the 9 Highway bridge, both of which are now considered mistakes and which planners are trying to figure out how to reverse.

You are so right.Im going to have your white bitch!!!

Anonymous said...

why was the old bridge so different?

doesn't compute.

Let’s build a giant bronze statue of Buck milking a giant cow each end of the bridge, where you would have to drive under their legs.

It looks fine to me.

It is a bridge used for moving traffic from one side of the river to the other. What is designed will do the job very well.
If mayor Mckneely wants to keep as much of the old bridge as possible then just repair the old bridge and move on. KCMO needs to ensure the proper yearly maintenance will be done in order for the bridge to last.
KCMO failed to do maintenance on the airport and look what happened. Lack of maintenance fits KCMO's planned obsolescence approach.

But does the new design include designated lanes for the four people who ride their bikes across the river most days?
That would add only about $3 or so million to the cost.
Get clowncilman Bunch on this immediately!

We need good functioning bridges that don't cost the taxpayers millions extra to make what some deem as pretty. It's a bridge people, not a birthday cake or Christmas tree.

The current bridge isn't some Architectural feat, it was simple straight forward bridge design for its era. They just renamed it Bucko Neil for political points. Replace it with the current straight-forward bridge design. No big deal.

As a Northlander, I'm really looking forward to being able to get through downtown faster. Quit complaining!

10:15 is right the existing bridge is not iconic as some say and a iconic bridge is not needed ya got one on the other side of the loop dimwits.
altho just about everything in KC sucks!

my GOLDENDOODLE thinks as much as possible the old bridge should be retained.

No money for anything sexier

Well, there is money but parson prioritizes rural seldom used roads and bridges to favor rural communities.

No conspiracy folks, plainly stated by the governor e.g. state of the state address

I will miss the three posts and graceful lines of the old bridge

We are still using old ass infrastructure

Central ave viaduct closed

Old ass12th street bridge will be a turd sandwich surprise some day no doubt

Same old ass bridges need upgrades, not stupid wastes like streetcar

The bridge looks dangerous without a mask.

12th st bridge already is a turd sandwich with junkies walking around the filling level that are too freshly fckd up to take their
tourniquet off.

Those that are not happy with the design are more than welcome to pay for something "prettier". MoDOT will gladly take your check. What's stopping you haters?

Anonymous said...

unobstructed views of the river is as 'pretty' and as 'soul enriching' as KC can get.

Anonymous said...

but that does not make berkley river side park soul enriching bc it ain't.

For those unhappy with the bridge design:

Go to http://www2.modot.org/fspay.htm to make payment 24/7. You can also call (573) 526-4280 or walk in at 105 West Capitol Avenue between 7:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Monday thru Friday.

Or set up a gofundme page for them and raise money for the bridge that you want. I'd like to see how that goes. 😏

Ha! Hadn't thought about that!

I'm just here to help. 😏

Just trying to help out the Kansas City whiners with champagne taste on a beer budget. How much have you ponied up to MoDOT for a better design? C'mon man! One of you get this going! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

When you are driving home, do you stop to admire the design of the road? How about the curbs or sidewalks? Me neither. When and IF this bridge does get built, nobody and that's NO BODY will give a flip about the design.
