Kansas City Star Loses Pulitzer Pundit

Like so many former dead-tree media newsies, Jimmy C's blogging mostly involves checking up on his former employer.

Credit where it's due, the newsman has greater insight into the print world than most.

In his latest post he laments a top ranking columnist who recently departed the paper. Her credentials demanded respect and the culture war screeds she shared were far more elegantly crafted than most of the hacks who just re-post DNC talking points.

Check the analysis as the so-called paper-of-record now struggles to maintain their editorial ranks . . .

With Colleen McCain Nelson gone, what will happen with The Star's opinion pages?

As you've probably noticed, I no longer write much about The Kansas City Star. The main reason is there isn't a lot to say. The paper's website is mostly a wasteland -- mainly sports and restaurant comings and goings -- and the investigative work it undertakes often doesn't relate to the Kansas City area.

  7. When Nelson came to KC I wrote to her a very nice letter explaining that she now had the opportunity to fix the KC Star and stop the hemorrhaging of subscribers. I suggested a more moderate tone in the opinions and editorial board. I suggested that since over half of subscribers live in Johnson County that the opinions should reflect those people carrying the Stars water. I never got a response so maybe I really did was my thought. Now a few years later she is leaving and my guess is it is going to be the radical left of Porter and the blonde. Sorry that won't save the Star, it's really beyond saving.

  9. When they stripped wm rockhill Nelson off the mast head, this Nelson hit the bricks too. No, not at all. She was in favor of the ingratitude event of the century.

Hey tony consider updating your local blog roll. I didn’t know about his page before and he has some interesting things to say.

They will still contain pieces from wire services as they do now.

  11. You all know that the star is heavily subsidized by the city therefore the commie red star is just repeating what mayor lickass wants said, if you all haven’t noticed how everything lickass says is reflected in what the paper says then you just might be.....

Mayor lickass and no balls is the leading voice of the commie red star because he is a well known professor racist liberal teachings amirite! Hahahahaha!

  16. What’s not understood is the editorials are what is wrong with the star and responsible for a large decline in readership.
    That’s not up for debate.
It’s a polarizing section and a huge turn off for readers and advertisers.
Largely liberal- why alienate half your readership with what they consider garbage?

Glad to see the editorial staff abolished and the section gone if it happens.
Then maybe we will see readers come back. That’s an apology that’s needed for the years of one sidedness.
Not open for debate- it’s the gospel truth and no scribe can argue otherwise or they are as woke as can be.

  17. Jimmy C Is Losing It

Yes, he missed the announcement of Nelson departing the Star. It was mentioned on TKC, either a post/comments/or both, many weeks ago. I know this for certain, because I commented on it myself.

More importantly, Jimmy C is apparently suffering from hallucinations if he thinks Nelson did an exemplary job as editorial board leader. When she came on-board she promised the community a revamped crew and representation from both sides of the political aisle. She lied.

For quite some time after she took the helm, the editorial board had no Black representation and 1 Latina. She brought on Porter who is semi-literate and forced out Sanchez who's not afraid to politely debate those with differing opinions.

KC readers gave up on the Star years ago, and the fact that Jimmy C didn't notice Nelson's absence for over a month is quite telling.

  18. Succession is not successful if the plan failed or their wasn’t a plan.
    Which means prior “leadership” failed.
And the cancel culture abolished their original leader.
    Karma is a bitch.
