Kansas City Keeps Demolishing History

Advocates for old, busted and iconic buildings in Kansas City mostly argue in vain for historic preservation.

From the Country Club Plaza to downtown, most developers realize that it's cheaper to build glass and steel garbage than to rehab old structures.

Still, the warnings about removing the past should resonate with locals who don't want this cowtown to end up looking like every other suburb in the world.

Historic Kansas City buildings are being demolished-can we do more to save them?

In December, Kansas City lost one of the buildings on the National Register of Historic Places with the demolition of the old Board of Education building on McGee. Local architect Edward W. Tanner designed the building, which opened in 1960, in a mid-century modern style that was inspired by the iconic Mies van der Rohe.

  2. Mid-century modern aka Stalinist-gothic. Historic? Well, yes. Architecturally significant? In a sad sort of way, yes. Save it? Heavens no.

  3. Maybe KCMO should do more to save historic sewers and streets below the ground, before worrying about stuff above it.

  5. Why would we bother? They are in KC where history means nothing and the spooks will just loot and destroy them anyway. besides, there is a development boom here anyway.

  6. Why not tear down an historic building? I mean you have too if you plan on bribing I mean paying a developer hundreds of millions of tax dollars just to come here and build something else we don’t need and the citizens will have to cover all the taxes they’re not gonna pay for 25 years amirite! Makes perfect sense to me.

The koloreds and the free gibsme crowd should be screaming at the tops of their lungs because the developers are getting all their free money!

Mind you, all this has happened under current and former black mayors, starting to see a pattern here.

And yet, although many people like midcentury design, as evidenced by the continued interest in Drummond homes, it's always interesting to read the opinions of architectural critics residing in rusted trailers in Podunk.
