Controversial Talker Rush Limbaugh Started Career In Kansas City, Dead At 70

The death of right-wing media legend Rush Limbaugh was announced today and his origin story starts in Kansas City.

Limbaugh was born and raised in Cape Girardeau, Mo.

Here's a glimpse at his humble beginnings in the cowtown media scene . . .

"In 1975 he became PD/afternoon host at Disco formatted 98.1 KUDL-FM Kansas City and then hosted nights at 1140 KFIX. Limbaugh would leave radio in 1979 and spent four years in sales for MLB’s Kansas City Royals before joining Full Service AC 980 KMBZ in 1983 and for the first time utilizing his given name. Limbaugh lasted less than a year at KMBZ before being fired and then hired at 1530 KFBK Sacramento."

Tribute to Mr. Limbaugh stands in the Missouri Hall of Fame, inside the grand rotunda of the state capitol in Jefferson City.

Right now we're more interested in local opinions on Mr. Limbaugh than sharing our own observations.

However, we will note that when he was honored with the Medal of Freedom there were some truly ghoulish remarks regarding his illness and impending demise along with tribute that actually overestimated his influence in a media segment that leans conservative overall but, actually, comprises a significant but still niche audience of the quickly fading American radio advertising market.

Credit where it's due . . . Rush Limbaugh started an attack so merciless and effective against "liberals" that he forced the left-leaning cognoscenti to rebrand itself as "progressive" given that his characterizations pushed the American discourse further right than any modern mainstream talker.

There's absolutely no denying the importance of this longtime media mogul who, undoubtedly, dominated Conservative discourse, created countless and far less talented clones along with providing a capable villain for his political opposition.

    2. Look at the stats, farm reports are actually just as well listened too. Political content is often all flash and no substance.

I like Rush and I like this blog. But ANYBODY can claim to be a kingmaker.

Let's not forget that he was actually very suspicious of Trump when he first started out. Far less than a fan.

  2. You can find his first wedding certificate and house deed in local public records; with his signature on it and everything. Pretty interesting to see where he used to live.

  3. "Credit where it's due . . . Rush Limbaugh started an attack so merciless and effective"

And Satan's laughing with delight as Rush goes into that sacrificial night. He made vicious unwarranted personal attacks on the families of politicians acceptable (starting with Chelsea Clinton). I won't pretend to be sorry he'll be rotting in hell if there is such a place.

He'll be missed like a hemorrhoid would be missed.

  20. The reason there is such a vitriolic reaction to Limbaugh for thirty years, is because Rush gave voice to millions of Americans. Make no mistake about it, that is why they hate him. The very idea that an opposing view is allowed to not only be broadcasted, but people agreeing with him is not allowed by democrats. They tried to compete with him and failed. They even stated publicly that they were afraid that he was convincing people with his views
If democrats were not so afraid of him, and confident that their own views are better, they would be honest and present their philosophy openly and open for debate. But they don’t. They just brand someone as racist and nazis and think that’s all they need to do. That doesn’t work anymore, but they still do it
Rush Limbaugh will be remembered long after all his critics have been forgotten

  21. I thought Rush was divisive in the 1990's but then he seemed to mellow out.

His last five years, he advocated for the working class and even discussed the hypocrisy of the RINO's like Romney and Mitch McConnell.

I think he brought God into his life his last few years which made him an advocate for the little guy.

    Pompous self-promoting carnival barker
    Hypocrite
    Multiple marriages, drug-abusing, vain asshole

Was never a fan, and I'm an Independent/Lean Conservative.

  24. He was an entertainer and political pundit. His clever weaving of those two roles is what made him unique and so successful. People are condemning him for laughing at liberals over his career. That was his schtick! Humor is wasted on the left as they cannot laugh at themselves. RIP Rush. As you pass you through the pearly gates, may you find thinks they way they ought to be.

  25. It's telling . . . the prevalence of comments celebrating Rush's death. it speaks to character.

Celebrating a man's death seems a bit of a hollow victory/wimp move when the guy in question has kicked your ideological ass damned nearly every day for 30+ years

    ReplyDelete
  26. I find it interesting the left says mean things about a man they disagreed with. Conservatives don't celebrate the death of political opponents. Tells you alot about the left. I've read comments from Hollywood...what dark depraved souls. Respectfully, Steve L

  27. And yet Rush Limbaugh will still be dead no matter how many conservatives sing his praises. Weird.

    ReplyDelete
  28. And 4:18 will eventually die no matter what he does. Funny.

    ReplyDelete
  29. One reason the right doesn't celebrate the deaths of leftist pundits, is that there are no leftist pundits who have any sort of impact or pose a threat.

Would anyone, other than a few journalists, notice if people like Rachel Maddow or Anderson Cooper were gone? Nope . . . and those two are probably the most well known.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Rush is demonized as a racist, homophobe, bigot because he used a form of extreme satire and absurdity to illustrate the absurdity of the left. The problem is the left is not bright enough to grasp the satire and think he meant everything he said literally. That makes it even funnier. Rush Limbaugh was a great entertainer, great American, and a great patriot.

  33. Rush love him or hate him he knew how to get peoples attention. Most that hated him were those that didn't like his in your face truth on the matter or subjects. I didn't always agree with him but I disagreed with him a whole hell of a lot less. The man had the gift of gab on about any subject and could keep the talk going on almost any issue and much like me wasn't afraid to talk about anything rather he agreed with it or not.

A friend of mine's Dad went to school with Rush in their childhood days in Cape Girardeau and has many funny tales of Rush as a kid. In fact it was Rush who got them to share the stories of their business on YouTube and as a result made them a very popular YouTube channel.

As I said, Rush love him or hate him he was more right then he ever was wrong which says a lot about media personalities today. At least when Rush was wrong it was do to his own personal opinion and not an attempt to deceive the public with false information to sway public opinion.

  39. Rush was a vile and evil bomb thrower and divided a nation, at least that is what I was told years ago. If you actually listened to the show he was humorous, intellectually rigorous and fun. Liberals who listened just long enough to be offended and switch off had their biases confirmed. Most didn't even go that far to form and retain an opinion since, as Rush often said, liberalism is intellectually lazy and requires, indeed seldom survives, critical thought. Those that listened longer were at least better educated for it and often ended up conservatives.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Rush had a great formula. Appeal to the uneducated redneck who wanted an excuse as to why their lives sucked. Blame others, feminazis, immigrants, blacks etc etc etc.

Oh my gosh, oh my jolly, is it true? Could he be directing a dinner of babies with the supreme court judges as dinner guest in a network of tunnels? Oh no! Save me! Whats to become of democracy?

  72. I lost respect for him when he became a illegal drug addict. He was naive. He fully believed in any conspiracy theory that lacked proof.

He also believed in bigfoot, the abomiational snowman, green monsters in the bedroom closet, spontaious human combustion, atlantis, sea dragons, lock ness monsters, vampires, zombies, that Kennedy was still alive, Hitler is alive and well in Venezula with Hugo Chavez, that michael Jackson was not a child molester, Nixon was honest, and Patrick Mahomes is actually Len Dawson in a disguise. In other words, RUSH WAS CRAZY.

  78. Hey, 11:21 pm and others:
to those who are obsessed with envy, including Rush's home, now valued at $50 million--

    1.  He paid $4 million for it in 1998.  End of story.  Has your home in KCMO appreciated that much???

    2.  He gave $50 million to the Lymphoma Society.  Just one of his many charities.

    ReplyDelete
  79. And yet he's still dead. Weird.

    ReplyDelete
  80. He gave 50 million to lymphoma - yet still smoked cigars and got cancer from them and died.

How frigging dumb was he? Pretty dumb. If you don't smoke, then your odds of lung cancer are almost zero. He was an asswhole anyway

  82. Limbaugh, a cigar and former cigarette smoker, was diagnosed with advanced lung cancer on January 20, 2020, after first experiencing shortness of breath on January 12; he had previously questioned the link between smoking and cancer deaths, arguing that smokers were not at any greater risk than people who "eat carrots.

He also said that Covid19 was the common cold and could not kill anyone.

What a fool. His smoking was a on-way elevator he took down to the grave.

    ReplyDelete
  83. i knew him in '74 '75 doing progressive rock afternoon's as Jeff Christy at KUDL. He talked too much shit instead of focusing on the music, pissed off the audience and the program director ran him off. I heard that he gave up and went to work off mic as sales or promotions.

  84. He was "uncoachable" as a DJ. Thats why he got fired so often. But as some rude people do, the finally find their niche in life and do well, in spite of their glaring shortfalls.
