TKC EXCLUSIVE!!! HONORARY DOWNTOWN KANSAS CITY 'TROY SCHULTE WAY' SHUT DOWN AFTER POLITICOS PROPOSE TRIBUTE TO FORMER CITY MANAGER WITHOUT FULL COUNCIL APPROVAL!!!

Right now the nation is prepping for one of the darkest seasons we've endured in the modern era and Kansas City confronts a myriad of challenges that threaten bankruptcy and worse . . . Amid this crisis, Northland council members take time to try and name a street after one of their buddies.

To wit . . .

NORTHLAND COUNCIL MEMBERS PUSH 'TROY SCHULTE WAY' SURPRISE TRIBUTE ON KANSAS CITY!!!

Inside word . . .

"This council is completely dysfunctional. It's like one hand doesn't know what the other is doing and everyone is out for themselves. They should have known better and it's a shame that they don't have people advising them."

Check the preliminary note from Council Lady Hall's aide hoping for a fun street party . . .

"Tomorrow, December 17, 2020 at 11:30 in front of the north entrance of City Hall the City will be honoring former City Manager Troy Schulte for his years of service to the City of Kansas City, Missouri. We would be honored to have you in attendance. Hope to see you tomorrow. Councilwoman Hall, Councilman Fowler and Councilman O’Neill."

This might be a snub to the current, controversial city manager and the mayor OR it might be just a bit of tribute to their old friend now working across the street.

Either way, the mayor didn't seem pleased . . .

Accordingly, check the response from Mayor Q as his note references the flaw in procedure his overall objections . . .

Re: Street Renaming/Honorary or Otherwise Should Have Full Council Approval

Colleagues,

It's come to our attention that there will be a ceremony based on a street renaming of 11th St. in front of City Hall for our former City Manager.  From all whom I've heard from, this comes as a surprise to most of the Council (and myself).  I would recommend we hold providing such an honor until Council--in full--has the opportunity to vote on such a designation, or at the very least, some conversation is had with council members from the district in which the designation is made.  If necessary, I will introduce legislation codifying such a requirement as a requirement to such a designation, including the one set for tomorrow.

In terms of the commission/s used, the street naming commission's primary role is naming of new streets that are not part of the parks system, not renaming or placing designations on streets without notice to the Council as a whole--particularly running in front of our nearly 90-year old City Hall.  For example, our colleague, Councilwoman Robinson went through a Council resolution earlier this year, passed unanimously, to name an existing bridge in her home (3rd) District for former Councilwoman Carol Coe. That same process should be used here. And, unlike in the prior example, the public infrastructure to be renamed at least sat in her own district.

I respect our former City Manager, as I do former Mayors James, and former manager Cauthen, who all are worthy of recognition (but have none yet), but who we should formally recognize not through procedures hidden from Council, but in a resolution or some fair process that the city broadly signs onto.

I don't know why Carol Coe needs a resolution in front of all us, but our former Manager can just get something pushed through staff.

I'd hope supporters reconsider the designation, at least as to the procedure used, to spare this Council and the City of further public discussion of this when we have other important topics to discuss before the public such as addressing Fire, infrastructure, budget, and other issues, respectfully, inherited from the former manager's tenure.

Mayor
Kansas City

And so . . .

All of this petty street naming talk reveals that quite a few members of council don't really seem to understand the dire circumstances confronting Kansas City in the very near future and it's pretty much business as usual at 12th & Oak.

    1. Why are we naming ANYTHING after Troy Schulte? He's one of the worst city managers KC has ever had.

    2. This is exactly what the mayor gets. When he was on Council he did the same thing with MLK blvd on The Paseo. Voters had to switch it back for him.

In spirit you're right but that actually did pass the full council.

Why does Coe need a bridge named after her after all the crap she brought onto the city?

Troy is in the same boat. We don't need to be reminded what a loser he was.

This renaming crap has got to come to an end.

How about just letting the voters decide on the renaming of any public street in the city and even that has to pass by a large majority.

  5. Put Troy's street in the northland, that's all he cared about.

  6. Why on Gawd’s earth would this City even want to name a street in honor fo Schulte. I agree with Lucas, there isn’t a real good reason for this. What was so special about Schulte that wasn’t special with Wayne Cauthen and other City Managers. GTFOH... He DOES NOT deserved, nor has he earned a street named in his honor. Let him go back to Iowa or wherever he’s from and let them names something after him. He was as crooked, lying politician as you can get. No thanks on honoring this asshole.

  17. 10:08 I like where you’re going with that, the black council members need to be brought back down to earth, they think their shit doesn’t stink, all they have ever thought about is themselves and nobody else, there’s actually people that have done something for the city that deserve this honor and not just somebody because pthey are black. On kcmo’s own online map there’s a place to click on and it shows all the honorary street names and 99% of them are black, and most of them are fat fake revruns.

The only reason for the blacks to complain about a street named after a white guy is they are racist.

  18. Get a clue, there are a lot of white people who know what a heel Troy has been. World class huckster who gave away millions of taxpayer money to corporations and developers. We don't need a street named after him. We need to disavow his policies.

Schulte was the highest paid KCMO employee ever and led us into the mess we have now with the new KCI, T-Mobile Center with no chance at an NBA or NHL team in reality, Power and Light district, the collaboration with the developer of the massive debt of the garage and rich apartment spaces, the convention hotel, an 800 million infrastructure program that mainly served the northland and many other boondoggles. I wouldn't name a cow path after this arrogant ass*. He got us into debt we can probably never repay.

  28. Our current Mayor and his comment chorus conveniently blame all of the City's current woes, financial and otherwise, on Troy Schulte. Our elected officials and their predecessors are responsible for the many years in the making financial crisis that we confront now, not the administrative staff they hire and oversee, e.g., Troy Schulte never signed off on a single Fire Department pension benefit increase!
