KANSAS CITY ANIMAL RIGHTS ACTIVISTS DECRY PLAZA HORSE CARRIAGE RIDES AMID COVID-19 PANDEMIC!!!

The return of a Kansas City tradition has sparked ire among local animal lovers.

To wit and because that photo up top is from a few years ago but still seems to sum up the current political zeitgeist . . .

ONCE AGAIN, ANIMAL RIGHTS ACTIVISTS OPPOSE HORSE CARRIAGE RIDES OVER ALLEGED CRUELTY!!!

A couple of notes have been sent our way on this topic but we feel like we need to share information to clear up some common misconceptions . . .

Here's a resource to contradict a few claims from activists . . .

MU College Of Veterinary Medicine: Coronavirus - Disease in Horses is Different to Humans

Still, the complaints go beyond pandemic risk.

Here's part of a plea sent our way . . .

"Our equine friends shouldn't be shown such cruelty. They are not transportation. The horses have rights and parading them around for amusement on city streets is the very opposite of holiday goodwill and kindness. It's harmful for the horses who belong in nature and not next to cars. Chicago will ban horse drawn carriages next year. Kansas City needs to be on that same path. The horse carriage rides on the Plaza are a step backward."

Here's the mainstream media news counterpoint . . .

KMBC: Holiday tradition of horse-drawn carriages on the Plaza continues

Deets . . .

"Horse-drawn carriages return to the Country Club Plaza at a time when many people want a sense of normalcy during the holidays. There are new precautions added to an old tradition . . . In addition to being in fresh air, they've added hand sanitizer, masks and social distancing. They're limiting it to one group per carriage on every carriage, even the big one so that people are safe and there's adequate social distance. Most make reservations ahead of time, limiting contact with others."

You decide . . .

  2. Silly comment. The hoses actually thrive doing this work. Most of them respond will to it and love being on parade. This so-called activist doesn't know what he/she is talking about.

  4. The animal rights activists want $15/hr for the horses and demand that Rick Smith be fired or they will break windows and loot the place. Horse Lives Matter.

The Amish and Mennonite communities will be very surprised to learn this "woke" factoid.

  9. The stupid people of Kansas City always seem to get more press time than the smart ones do.

What's cruel is the sane folks having to hear the chirpings of the insane every time we turn around in the news.

Real animal cruelty is people who get dogs then chain them up in the backyard and ignore them for the most part. Or the ones who shove them in a cage when they leave home for the day. These horses are from from being abused or mistreated.

This is insane, Horses have rights? Where is that in the constitution? Actually horses have been beasts of burden for more than 30 centuries. Like Camels and Mules they have the unique ability to carry humans or to pack gear efficiently and without harm to the animal. Yes, the Amish even use them today to pull their buggies and to work their farm by pulling plows. Horse owners, especially in agriculture, revere these animals for their docile nature and strength. Horses also develop a link to their owners, like dogs do, and will follow them or come when called. The carriage rides are not something I am inclined to do but on mostly level streets with well maintained equipment it would be rare to see one of these animals hurt or upset unless some demented protester is causing a ruckus around them intentionally. Stop the insanity woke people.

  13. ^^This isn't about transportation, this is about Cosplaying Cinderella.

However, at this time in our country's history, it boggles the mind that this is what people are concerned about.

I'll worry about the horses when we've found housing for all the homeless.

January will be the dying month.

  14. nothing quite changes the aura of a romantic carriage ride then when a horse decides it's time to dump a load on the street. it's kinda funny though.

  16. Horses were domesticated and bred to pull wagons...what's the problem. How is this abusing horses? Would the outraged idiots rather have the horses dropped off at the glue factory.
