Nice weather today will inspire more people to take to local streets. Sadly, local driving skills have been degraded during the pandemic and there have been more than 100 deadly car crashes so far this year.

Update: Driver arrested. Check the local injury report . . .

  4. gosh let's have some actual comments about this local important story not nonsense.

very glad the motorist who left the scene is caught. what a criminal. this is what needs to be called "an example."

a wreck at 1:30 am - very dangerous being out there at night. 1000 times more dangerous than during the day.

independence is a good city for biking, good roads, plenty of side streets. but busy roads like 23rd would be suicide. funny thing is there are "bike route" signs in certain spots along 23rd street.

the coverage is just from the police news release so not much yet. bicycle traveling on 23rd westbound at liberty street, struck by car in same direction. that's a block or two away from noland. not much of a sidewalk there to use for a bike, if I recall. was the bike crossing liberty street and the car turning from 23rd? not sure about it.

it would be the kind of thing where you would certainly encourage an alternate route than that busy road, but, trouble is, sometimes there isn't one. or maybe this cyclist just didn't know an alternate route.

and this is where groups like bike KC or whatever could do something useful.

there is no safe connection by bike between independence and KC.

independence avenue, truman road, 23rd street, - they are all suicide at the blue river. there is armco and difficult narrow bridges. 40 hiway is about the widest and nowadays is not so much traffic but i am terrified that the plan for 40 highway is to road diet it to render it a major obstacle to economic activity.

so what bike walk kc could do is figure out a easement just for peds and bikes connecting KC and independence but don't do it in a way that vexes motorists just for shits -n- giggles.
