Kansas City Middle-Class Life Crumbles

Local biz provides a reality check for the American economy that only seems to be getting worse as the pandemic continues . . .

"In Kansas City, the median income is more than one-third below what is needed to easily buy or rent in the area."

Of course, the listicle is mostly click-bait but still offers a few worthwhile highlights that'll seem quaint before we start to cope with the impact of inflation given all of the freebie COVID cash that has recently been printed up.

How much you need to earn to live comfortably in Kansas City and other major metros

The residents of 14 U.S. cities must earn at least $100,000 a year to comfortably rent or own a home in their area, according to an analysis from GoBankingRates.com. The website used housing information from Zillow and price estimates of necessities like transportation and groceries from Sperling's Best Places to determine how much a person needs to earn to live in the country's 50 largest metros.

  1. You definitely do not have to be rich to live comfortably in Kansas City. A decent restaurant meal for four, with drinks, is typically $100 or more in other major cities, and that doesn't include a tip. Gas is cheap here. A $100K home here is $600K to $1M on either coast. Property taxes are relatively cheap. Utilities are very affordable compared to CA. We have it easy here in comparison. The absolute worse place to live is San Francisco. I felt like a second class citizen, supporting the homeless, who either want a mansion or high-dollar hotel room with maid service to live in, or nothing. They absolutely will not leave the streets for low-income housing. The areas away from the tourist attractions are truly awful now with homeless setting up encampments right in front of your home. I couldn't park in front of my house. I had to rent a garage blocks away. My friends' cars were constantly broken into. They gave up calling the cops. Auto insurance is sky high out there. I am glad to live in the KC area. It was like my paycheck doubled after moving here.

  2. Well in Kansas city it's pretty much useless because it's democrat run and they love to tax you to death even when you don't live there. Then there's the getting off of work and having either riots or flash mobs attack or even closing down due to violence. Best thing to do is live and work in the burbs, it's easier on your car, your life, and your finances.

@7:51 If you are a liberal from CA you are NOT WELCOME HERE GO HOME TROLL! You people come here and run up the prices of everything you think things are a great price but you don't stop to think you're not in CA. Then you bring the very policies that ruined your state and you start taking our state down. Get the F out of here we will make it hard on you!

  4. As a ratio goes KC is cheap to live. You just have to turn a blind eye to the property and local taxes and surcharges on your bill. I take my own alcohol with me- well now that pandemic has occurred- everything will change

  5. The $100,000 figure is pure fiction. If they use the median income (counting only full time employees and not part time or unemployed) then they should use the median apartment rent too.

  7. There's a great food truck that passes thru the area frequently, On The Hook Fish & Chips. Delicious deep fried fish!!!!!!

Recently, as I bought several dinners from them in Gladstone, I asked why they couldn't occasionally operate closer to my location South of the river.

They do not want to pay KC E-taxes. So, Gladstone, Liberty even Excelsior Springs is in their route.

  10. 8:52 I made a comment about how expensive it is to live out there. Not a word about politics. I lived in San Francisco when I was in the Army, you idiot. I moved to KC after retirement, having been raised near Rolla.
