CCO Creates App to Offer Free Rides to Polls in 5 Zip Codes
Communities Creating Opportunity worked with an app developer this year to create Election Riders, an Uber-like app that will be employed on Tuesday, November 3 in five Kansas City zip codes: 64109, 64127, 64128, 64130, and 64132. These are CCO's focus areas, the city's low life-expectancy zip codes, places deeply affected by poverty.
Election Riders will be available in app stores on November 1. Then on election day, residents can request rides to their polling places via the app or a phone number (816.221.0556) if they don't have a smartphone. Volunteer CCO drivers, thoroughly trained and following public health safety procedures, will ferry them to cast their vote.
"Many residents in our low life-expectancy zip codes have very limited transportation options. Poverty is a serious barrier to democratic participation in Kansas City and society at large, so we wanted to do something about it," said Garrett S. Griffin, Communications Director at CCO.
Interviews with organizers and drivers are available upon request, as are opportunities for advanced shots of marked CCO vehicles and the app itself.
