Kansas City Blogger Claims Black Lives Matter Vs. Police Fight Hurt Nelson-Atkins Museum Of Art And Helped Spark Layoffs

COVID-19 has impacted the arts world along with every other biz in Kansas City. However, a revenue model predicated on the generosity of patrons is exceptionally vulnerable.

Accordingly . . .

Both conservatives and progressives fought over police using the Nelson as a staging ground and it seems that put the institution in a tough spot . . . Which it, of course, mishandled.

And so, from an artsy perspective we take a look at this post that offers some behind the scenes deets along with the focus of the institution re-imagined.

Informality blog: Staff Reductions at Nelson-Atkins Spotlights Need for Restructuring of Exhibitions and Programming

Money line:

"This summer’s fiasco with local police using the Museum as a staging ground during the Black Lives Matter protests in Kansas City has also damaged the Museum’s credibility with the Black community. It took Director Zugazagoitia seventy-two hours to make a public response, leaving enough time for people to form opinions about the Museum’s role in the city.

"The Museum must make innovative and lasting decisions soon. Among such choices are to consider how the Museum is being perceived outside the “family-friendly” bubble that seldom allows for creative curation and scholarship. Curatorial and educational activities cannot just safely skim current events happening outside their door. They must use their resources to go beyond its role as an encyclopedic institution, and that may include deaccessioning."

For those who care about the Kansas City art world, this really is a good post that deserves attention. Read it in its entirety.

  1. Most tkc readers don't know art from the smell of their own farts. But I appreciate your effort, T.

  2. ^^ Who can blame them? Good art and fart smells both create a certain type of visceral stimulation in humans. Those humans who deny that fact already have their heads up their asses.

  3. It's way past time to deaccession intersectionality for stakeholders whose suffering of microaggressions force them into pointless neologistic stupidity.

    Jesus, shut the fuck up.

  6. Screw the Nelson. During the Plaza protests the police were using the front lawn of the Nelson for staging. Nelson told the police they had to leave. Shitty move Nelson, shitty move.

  7. Anything happening over at K C Animation and Illustration? Has that librarian been fired yet for jeopardizing their nonprofit status?

  8. Who gives a flying fuck about perceptions in the black community? This is a world class museum. Are we going to start taking down great art to make any for more boosts to fragile black self-esteem?

  9. Nelson Atkins has no one to blame but their selves. They took part in the protest against the President in an indirect way and their hatred for cops too. So liberals have pitted us against each other "black against white and white against black." They have taken sports away from us. They have taken movies away from us and now they have taken art away from us. Nelson Atkins is the last place I would ever go and I used to go there once or twice a year. What was wrong with the police using the area? Did Nelson Atkins think the rioters wouldn't break into the museum or destroy priceless property? But then these same morons will turn around and call the police if or when they need help. Forget the Nelson Atkins museum. Don't waste time on morons who think dividing the city is the way to go.

  11. We did not renew our friends or art, Fart for short, because Julian shit on the KCPD. I’m sure more people with money were put off by that than were put off by cooperating with KCPD. Fuck BLM.

  12. There were roaming mobs of people threatening property destruction and violence just steps from the museum full of priceless and irreplaceable works of art. The mob's response to looting and destruction of property...."insurance will cover it".

My favorite part about this story is the police in KC were somehow engaged in violence against the rioters/protesters. Look at the videos. Hours-upon-hours of people screaming obscenities in the faces of police, no masks, spitting, throwing rocks and frozen water bottles, and frightening rage directed at police standing there doing nothing other than keeping protestors off busy streets (you know, protecting them from being run over). Hours-upon-hours-upon-hours.

  13. Damaged the museums credibility with the black community? Since when has the black community appreciated fine art? Does the Nelson have a west coast rap exhibit? What it did was damage the museum with the educated white community, you know the one that has the leisure time to go to the museum and the weather to support it and appreciates the protection that the police provides. Another KC institution that has shot itself in the foot trying to please the BLM rioters. Idiots.

  14. Defunding the Nelson is incredible indeed.
Lost patronage and making it political was a mortal sin.

Johnson County should build a museum to take its place.

How many have pledged to never go there again... until the current regime is replaced and the museum is defunded?

Art has its place... in Johnson County!!!

  15. And move the Royals and Chiefs to Johnson County.
The players will make 1% more that way.

  16. The Nelson sided with anarchists, we will not forget. This contributed to the continuing demise of the Playza.

  17. "Deaccessioning"?

In other words, the Nelson Art gallery is politicized and will soon be displaying hate America, hate Capitalism, hate the accomplishments of our forefathers propaganda.

Will never go back to the Nelson Art Gallery again.

The stupid steel "Morton Building" addition to the Nelson-Atkins Art Gallery ruined the historic aesthetic beauty of the Greek architecture.

Looked like something Ma and Pa Kettle would attach to their trailer or shack.

  18. I don't think Mayor Lucas and other City leaders have realized the extent that they have turned off citizens to anything Kansas City related.

Folks have no desire to go to downtown KC, the Plaza, the Swope Park Zoo etc. due to the permitted violence as a result of the police not being allowed to do their jobs against the criminal element.

It's not worth the risk to find your self and family the target of an altercation with a BLM, ANTIFA or other thug element as you will basically be on your own. Thugs are white and black.

The Marxist Media elite have done such a dis-service to this country by sensationalizing events. The Media has turned Blacks against Whites, Whites against Black, when 95% of people regardless of race, just want to get along with each other and take care of their families. Now everyone thinks the other race is out to get them.

There has been irreparable harm the last six months due to the media and Democrat Party leaders pitting the races against each other.

The Media and Democrat leaders like Pelosi live in gated communities or penthouses with armed security but tell we peasants that we do not need police to protect law-abiding citizens or firearms to protect ourselves.

Black families want police protection just as much as whites. Naturally, any bad cops need to be weeded out but 99% of the police are professionals putting their lives on the line for citizens.

  19. cultured black art aficionados demand the Nelson take down all that Rembrandt shit, and put up pictures of blonde White women's booties.

  20. The Nelson is basically a huge mansion to house rich people's art donations. NOT PEOPLE, not poor, not old, not disabled - JUST ART. Art worth billions of dollars. Art donated by the rich white folks of KC who own banks and business that local KC people frequented and made them all rich

  22. Julian turned his back on Kansas City police department. He wanted to be polically correct, but people don't forget. Shortsighted poor leadership. And now he shows us that objects are more important than employment of museum staff. Misplaced values.

  25. Nelson Atkins just needs to cater to blm more. needs more exhibits promoting BS that Egyptians were subsaharan blacks, that blacks built America sure that will bring in the desired black patronage and the need for more staff and security.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Julian can shove it. Turn the Nelson into KC or Raytown. If he feels a majority of their patrons support looney-toon Liberalism. He can stew in his own whacked out political views and wonder where the customers are. As someone said, earlier, get woke, go broke.
