Community Pressure To Fire KCPD Chief Targets Police Board

Protests over police brutality and officer-involved shootings lobby the only appointed organization that has any real power in this situation — The KC Police Board.

However, the mayor is part of this group and so far the outcry hasn't inspired him to take any action. Moreover, the oversight body has been almost completely silent and seems supportive of the top cop.

Here's another round-up on the hot mess that offers bold statements but very little movement.

Civil Rights Activists Pressure Police Commissioners During Meeting To Fire Chief Smith

Civil rights activists say they will continue to disrupt meetings of the Kansas City Board of Police Commissioners until police Chief Rick Smith is fired, demoted or resigns. The commissioners abruptly adjourned after a string of religious leaders and activists called for a vote on Smith's termination.

  1. Wonder how it would go if a bunch of us showed up and the reverend's church and started yapping while he was preaching and refused to shut up and promising to come back until we got our way.

  2. We already know what happens, remember the silent protest with save the Paseo? The cleave went nuts lying about how they were abusive and disruptive and he screamed racism. Thank god they filmed it and proved that dementia cleave was lying.

That is an excellent idea as long as you video the racist fat fake revs and congregation.

  4. Until black people take responsibility for their lives, including gun violence epidemic, we will cycle through police chiefs, new 'procedures', all types of nonsense with zero positive results for black community.

Black people, stop blaming others for problems in your own house. If you're mad at somebody it should be your neglectful and missing fathers, your mommas who taught you to be a criminal (or looked the other way 'cuz they was gettin' da money from u). That's where your anger should be directed at.

  5. KC blacks are the source of violence. Just look at their violent behavior at the KCPD Commissioner’s meeting. Why do blacks shoot one another and then blame the police ? Sad, really. Clean up your own house before you blame others.

  6. There are a couple of million MO citizens who support the governors choices for the police board. The star has a couple of thousand MO readers, the Reverends have a couple of thousand members in their churches. Guess who will win this battle.

  7. Despicable and disrespectful behavior directed at the Police chief and commissioners is clearly a diversion from the reality of the lack of accountability and responsibility of the inner city/ African American/ blacks.

    You are being generous :-)

The only people who read the Red Star these days are mom's looking at the grocery ads and old people checking out who died in the obituary section.

Nobody is reading the editorial page, front page or even sports page these days.

That is a good representation of how nothing they are saying makes sense.

  11. why do police brutality happen in first place? is it because the potential arrestees choose not to listen to cops when they first arrive on the scene, can't comprehend orders given when cops first arrive on the scene, can't believe the cops were called on them in the first place, etc.?

there has to be reasons to cause the brutality. Surely retarded and mentally challenged people may not understand at first but they must do their best to understand when the cops show up - or things get bad real quick.

these upper echelon black people know this stuff already - why use the white man {cops} for the scapegoat?

  12. It's INGRAINED IN BLACK CULTUER to resist police, to be disrespectful, to not cooperate, to lie to them, to not follow commands and....

They wonder why cops have to use force or shoot their chimpanzee asses?

They lack basic human intelligence. Besides, they like living in cages. Prison is where most black ppl belong.

    Black person: Fuck you, motherfucker.

Police: We are going to shoot you if you don't put the gun down.

Black person: Fuck you, motherfuckers. Fuck all y'all bitches. (Walks toward police waving weapon.)

    POLICE FIRE.

Black person: Why'd you shoot me? I can't breathe. I want a supervisor!

Police: (Turns off bodycam) Fuck you, nigger.

Think about that for a minute.

Send all our black people over to St Louis, our murder and crimes rates will then plummet.

  19. This is a perfect example of these people, on one hand they ask for help protecting the black community and on the other hand they don't like the police response so they demand the chief be fired.

Here's the facts, Chief Smith has worked hard to bridge the gap. But, neither he nor any other chief, including a chief of "color" can break the silence in the hood when a crime is committed.

If these ministers/activists want to make a difference start doing something about the hood rats who create crime against other people of color.

  21. I am a senior citizen, white, and I have children now over the age of 30. When they were young, about 8-10 years old I had "THE TALK" with my boys. I told them that if they were someplace and a law enforcement officer, we use to call them police, told them to stop or asked them a question to stop and answer the question without being disrespectful or uncourteous in any way and don't ask why. Always say YES or NO, not uhh or untuh, speak clearly and respectfully. When I was teaching them how to drive I taught them how to change tires, change oil, install wiper-blades, change light bulbs and keep the car clean inside and out in addition to wearing a seat belt and the rules of the road. I also taught them that if a police car was behind them to drive like normal. If the lights went on to stop as soon as they could do so safely, use four way flashers and turn off the car, lower all the windows, no radio on, hands on the wheel, sit up straight and do exactly what the officer asked them to do. I told them if they did that they would never be in trouble and I wouldn't be angry if I had to help them pay the ticket. And my kids are white kids so what is different in the black community? Teach them right from a young age and knock off the attitude.

My father had the same discussion with me. He also said never run from the police or they can shoot you for resisting arrest. That stuck in my head forever.

And yes, my Dad and I are white.

So many boys grow up without fathers instilling discipline and sage advice and that is why our society is disintegrating.

Obeying the police has nothing to do with skin color. The police risk their lives ever time they are called for a domestic dispute, robbery, home invasion or just pulling some one over. They have no idea what weapons you have on you or in your car. They have been lied to and tricked by criminals many times.

  24. Mr. Howard does not deserver the title of Reverend. He is a bully and a hate monger. This was totally disrespectful and he should not be allowed into another police meeting. Police Chief Smith is a good man and is trying to keep the peace. He has reinstated the CIOs and social workers into the police system. I do believe the police are doing their very best and I have to agree with the majority that are posting here. The police do not know whether they are dealing with black or white when they are dispatched to a call. I am sick of the racists moves the black community is using. When will we all learn to get along with each other. enough is enough. Raise your children to respect everyone but especially the police. How many of us could do their job. It is dangerous but necessary to keep the peace.

  26. poor blacks. have nothing but protest, adding to the murder rate and crime in general. Prove me wrong. What are they superior at as a race ? Fact is fact. Weird.

  27. @1:57 is correct, these people at best only represent a less-than-30% (and decreasing) portion of the Kansas City Community, and this would only be accurate IF there was an absolute consensus within that small minority of the Community.

"Activists" perhaps, but what is really happening is that a shrinking minority of Kansas City's population that had achieved a disproportionate amount of influence and representation with the leadership of this City over the last twenty years, is grasping for as much control over the City's future as they can achieve, since they see their "constituencies" decreasing at an alarming rate, and know that the current Census will reflect that decrease.

The next redistricting of Council seats will probably be the cause of much controversy, highly vocal outrage and at last a few lawsuits as this (probably <25%) minority of Kansas City's population sees their role in City affairs shrink to a more equitable "one person, one vote" level.

  29. many studies conclude black teens have high self esteem and are underachievers. They do not underachieve due to lack of confidence. "Whites have little say in how blacks feel about themselves." Some claim they underachievers because of discrimination.

  32. the problem is when their underachieving leads to crime and violence to survive, taking their families and whole community down with them. And then once they figure some things out they already got a rap sheet cemented on their foreheads that impedes their survival even more.
