Kansas City Star Features Johnson County Allegations Of Racism

'I could end up a hashtag': Black men in Johnson County talk routine hassles, fears

Ron Lackey was relaxing in his Overland Park home one day when six police officers in four squad cars arrived to arrest him - for an unpaid speeding ticket. That's really it - all that fuss for his absent-minded failure to respond to a letter about a ticket.

  1. But who's really at fault here? So the black man is saying he doesn't have to respond to a traffic violation? Without responding that puts a warrant out for him just like it would for anyone else. This is another attempt at the victim narrative and that's if this story is true.

  8. KC Star ought to do some stories on how to save itself from itself.

You know- instead of hearsay stories that alienate they few dozen readers they have left.

Vote today to defund the Star- protest anyone with papers in their driveway or store.
Call QT and tell them to quit selling the Star.

  10. I just went by a grocery and asked they quit selling the Star.

The clerk said they haven’t sold one in months and they end up throwing them away. She was clearly embarrassed.
She said her neighbor gets a paper but some millennials protested his house and threatened to call him a liberal so he had to quit paying the subscription fee of half his pension.

While this may or may not be true it’s the future. The - because he no longer has to pay is newspaper subscription- can afford:

    1. Vacations
    2. Food
    3. Depend

  13. I was at the "Back the Blue" rally in Olathe last night. The Olathe NAACP head spoke in support of the police and said that JOCO had good PD's. The Star goes out and finds discontents and tries to paint a picture of racist cops a thing here in JOCO. You can always find someone who will have complaints. The Star is just the fake news media at work trying to destroy a good community in the name of PC. Its all BS. Democrats are destructive to race relations.

  16. I'M A VICTIM IN THE GOLDEN GHETTO

Well, I suppose it all started when I was born Black.

One day I got pulled over by the police for driving-while-Black. They said I was doing 53 mph in a 35 mph zone, but that radar-gun they were using was racist! I refused to sign the ticket and drove off, squealing my tires, when the officer walked back to his vehicle. I threw the ticket out the window.

I didn't do anything wrong! It's all part of a big White conspiracy to keep the Black man down. You know what I'm saying? Black Lives Matter!

If this story is true, the automated system that issues a warrant for non-payment of tickets is racist against black people?

  18. all new to JOCO from a place of higher crime. They move to JOCO then bitch about cops doing what has worked to keep crime rate lower. Don't like it move back to the democrat crime ridden shit hole you left.

  19. I listened to these men tell their stories, and while each appeared to be friendly and intelligent individuals, none made the case for JOCO law enforcement being racist.

Mr. Findlay actually had nice things to say about OPKS Police. The interaction he recalled was 100% due to his own negligence. Did you notice that he's still fudging on his culpability? He says things like, "I may or may not have received a letter from the District Attorney's office about my skipped court date."

Two of the men were stopped by police when they were out at 2AM or 3AM. They both were released without incident.

Another man was driving a newly purchased used car with temporary license tags. He showed his paperwork and was free to go.

I didn't hear a single story corroborating the theory that JOCO police are racist. Part of an officer's job, what we want them to be doing, is to investigate things that look out of place. A vehicle backed up to a business at 2AM, loading things into the vehicle, looks suspicious. Most people are not out driving at 3AM, and police are looking for possible impaired drivers at this time of night. It's a common practice among illegal drivers to place forged temporary tags on their vehicle. Who thinks that you can not pay your ticket, skip court, ignore the District Attorney's letter, and not eventually face reckoning?

    BLUE LIVES MATTER!

  21. I see a lot of racism in the comments of this post. There are a few good people who get it but most are just reactionary trash.

It's funny that people who deny that racism exists are usually the most racist.
