KC residents call out councilman who used derogatory word for people with disabilities in meetings

KANSAS CITY, Mo - A Kansas City councilman is under fire after using a derogatory term often used to describe people with developmental and intellectual disabilities. There's been a lot of talk lately about words that are harmful to people based on race, sex, religion and gender, but people in the disabilities community say it's [...]

  1. You mean retarded. It's a word used for years even by medical staff so what's the big deal Karen?

  2. ^^^ Medical staff haven't used that word as a clinical practice for 50 years. You're really far behind the times. Please try and catch up.

  3. Oh! I couldn't figure out what the R word was. I guess I'm a retard.

  4. NASCAR retards the race car engines for a fairer race. Should a driver refer to his car as having special needs?

Blacks say "retard". No one else does.
Blacks call all Asians "Ching Chongs". No one else does,

  6. THE "N-WORD" USED THE "R-WORD" AND BY THE TIME IT WAS ALL OVER, THE CONVERSATION HAD BECOME "X-RATED"!

  8. He doesn't appear to be the sharpest knife in the drawer himself, IMO. And dude, before you go before the cameras. (Channel 4), brush and floss. Gross.

  9. Might want to read up on how your kind generally scores one standard deviation below the mean in IQ tests, there, Brandon.

  10. White people came up with the word. Good grief. Retardation is a thing.

  11. ^^^ Yes, be we also want to be nice to you. Language has always evolved through human history. Don't hang on to a word that even medical professionals have abandoned.

  12. I am not a doctor. I am not writing a history or making a diagnosis. I don't care if the medical community quit using the term 50 years ago. Fifty years ago the medical community said marijuana would drive kids insane and turn them into murderers too, so forgive me if I don't pay particular attention to what the medical community has to say. Retarded, short for mentally retarded, just means mentally slow, or having a slow wit or tough time with concepts. It's certainly a derogatory description, similar to dum bass. Our mayor is mentally retarded. He's slow, dimwitted, and can't understand basic concepts of leadership, responsibility, and management. I didn't call him the n-word. I didn't disparage him for his color. I used mentally retarded to describe him. The medical community doesn't get to decide what terms I use to describe people.
