By today's standards "walkout" activism is quaint and speaks to a moment in history when people actually believed in the promise of equality. Accordingly, here's a quick but worthwhile write-up that recalls the glory days of the civil rights movement before the nation delved into the muck of partisan identity politics and racially charged power struggles.

On Sept. 16, 1969, a small group of Chicano students at Kansas City's now-closed West High School marched off campus to advocate for civil liberties. As the sounds of mariachi played, they marched toward the Chicano Cultural Center.
