Jackson County Mostly Cancels Christmas

There's one important exception to this bad news, Christmas In The Park will continue because it's mostly a drive-by event . . . Everything else looks like it's shut down given the ongoing pandemic . .. Checkit:

Jackson County Parks + Rec cancels events amid ongoing COVID-19 concerns

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – After careful consultation with the Jackson County Health Department, Jackson County Parks + Rec is announcing its decision to cancel all events throughout the fall and winter, except for the annual drive-thru holiday lights spectacular Christmas in the Park.

This decision is due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Eastern Jackson County is currently in the red zone, indicating significant community spread. Nearly 500 new cases of coronavirus and six deaths occurred in the last week. The percent positive rate is 15.61%.

“Since this pandemic began, our Parks + Rec team has taken the guidance of the Jackson County Health Department seriously. New protocols were immediately put in place in the spring and summer to allow visitors the opportunity to safely enjoy our parks and lakes,” said Jackson County Executive Frank White, Jr. “Public health remains a priority as we transition into the fall and winter where our annual traditions attract thousands from across the metro. We cannot put the lives of our family, friends, and neighbors at risk of a virus that has no boundaries. I know it will be difficult missing out on the events we love, but we must do everything we can to mitigate the spread of the virus now so we can enjoy them in the future.”

Cancelled signature events include, but are not limited to, the Missouri Town 1855 Fall Festival of Arts, Crafts & Music; Grand Festival of Chez les Canses and Fall Muster at Fort Osage National Historic Landmark; Dogtober Fest at Kemper Outdoor Education Center; Trip the Light Fantastic Bike Ride thru Christmas in the Park; and Christmas in the Sky at Longview Lake Beach.

“We look forward to the day that we can welcome the public back to these treasured family traditions,” said Jackson County Parks + Rec Director Michele Newman. “I am happy to share that Christmas in the Park, Jackson County’s drive-thru holiday wonderland, will open as scheduled on Wednesday, November 25.”

Christmas in the Park is not being cancelled due to its nature and design that allows visitors to enjoy the more than 500,000 holiday lights and 175 animated displays from the comfort and safety of their vehicle with their family.

  1. Let Jackson County close, the other counties in the metro area are going to be open with lots of things to do like pumpkin patches fall fests and Christmas open houses. Let Jackson Count wallow in their fake virus count and fake information and scare tactics. Don't forget the flu is coming and they say it's going to be bad. Better stay in the basement from now on except for the so called peaceful protesters and the football game can't close that now can they. Liars.

  3. Jackson, the P#ssy County, doing everything it can to mimic the dysfunction and mistakes of KC so that the Boy Blunder does not feel so alone. Across the state line the metro area is coming back to life and this will only accelerate the shift of the center of gravity over to the more competently managed side as people and money move even more quickly to the side that DOES NOT HATE THEM.

Thanks for running our county into the ground, Frank.

For the city, that begins with debt service on a $35 million bond that it sold—about $2.6 million this budget year, according to Tammy Queen, Kansas City’s director of finance. When they approved the financing package, city leaders said the payments would come from the convention and tourism fund, which collects taxes from tourism and restaurant activities.

City council members in 2015 also agreed to pay management and catering contract fees for the hotel—a contractual obligation that received little notice at the time, but which Mayor Quinton Lucas now says could amount to as much as $100 million over 20 years.

“The $35 million bond was all anybody talked about,” Shields says. “But then they said, ‘oh yeah, there’s this catering contract.’ It grows exponentially. This is a huge payment of city dollars that I think was for no purpose except to hide the fact that we weren’t just putting in $35 million on the deal.”

Now, it looks like Kansas City will have to transfer up to $5.1 million from the general fund to the convention and tourism fund to pay Loews-related expenses, Queen says.
