Former Kansas City Mayor Sly James Shares Social Justice Message Amid Media Blitz

Our blog community can't help but notice the former KCMO Mayor stepping up his media profile in recent weeks.

To wit . . .

KANSAS CITY INSIDERS CONSIDER POLITICAL COMEBACK OF FORMER MAYOR SLY JAMES IF DEMOCRATIC PARTY BLUE WAVE WINS WHITE HOUSE!!!

Whilst the Mayor is unlikely to flip Missouri . . . That doesn't mean he's not in line for a top level appointment and a trip to D.C. as reward for endorsing the party line . . . Meanwhile, diehard Democratic Party loyalists might appreciate the support but remember that Mayor Sly espoused far more conservative views and was considered a nearly Republican politico about a decade ago.

Still, for now, here's the former Mayor keeping up appearances and offering his perspective on the current culture war:

"Former Kansas City, Missouri mayor Sly James joins CBSN to discuss the police shooting of Jacob Blake and the growing calls for social justice reform across the country."

Take a look . . .

  4. Yes.
The Slyster accomplished so much addressing the ever-increasing homicide rate in the city where he was the mayor for eight years.
Pay no attention to actual accomplishments or track record.
Social media and obscure TV spots are all that count!
You mean Sly was always just all about himself?
    Shocking!
    What a joke.

  5. The only thing he ever brought to the table was developer cash. Don't see that being useful at the federal level.

  6. Interesting, he seems to have all the answers, but this is the first time I've actually seen or heard anything from him.

  11. REVIEWING THE ACTUAL RECORD

Hey folks, let's take a trip back to 2015 and see what 2 people had to say about helping KCMO's East-side, in the KCPT documentary "Our Divided City."

    https://video.kansascitypbs.org/video/our-divided-city-our-divided-city/

On the topic of tax incentives to developers:
(Begin at the 46:00 minute mark)

Please note that it was Patrick Tuohey of the Show-Me Institute advocating for the East-side and low-income areas to receive the incentives (as they actually need them) and not the already well-to-do parts of town. Mr. Tuohey is a white male with Libertarian principles.

Sylvester James said, "Sometimes it's difficult to work East of Troost. There's this patina of hostility, and demand that the only people who are able to do things are African-Americans. That limits your pool of people, right there." Mr. James was the Mayor of KCMO at the time, and is a black male.

One of these men chooses to stand for fairness and equity, because it's the right thing to do. The other man thinks that because he was able to escape from his East-side upbringing and join the white developer social-class, those left behind just didn't try hard enough.

The first man would make an excellent KCMO Mayor, with his priorities in order, to represent all residents.
The second man has already held the position and demonstrated that his priorities were in-sync with the wealthy and powerful, against the best interests of most residents.

  12. Sly had 8 years to address the issues he's talking about now. But he was more concerned with serving his REAL masters and having the city help finance that precious Loews hotel and building the streetcar. Those types of things were Sly's real priorities. Never once did Sly prioritize people of color, or schools or anything. He made a token play to help education at the very end of his second term but it would have involved yet another regressive tax increase on the poor and was overwhelmingly shot down by the schools because it was a piss poor idea.

So Sly can get on his high horse now and tell everyone that will listen how he has it all figured out and what should be done to fix the issues. But the truth is these were never at the top of his mind when he had the power to do something about these things and instead he turned his back on "his people" in order to serve his wealthy masters while, at the same time, raising taxes and making things worse for "his people".

But hey, he got his money so all is well!
