This year's COVID-19 outbreak isn't the first pandemic that has confronted Kansas City's LGBT community.
Still in the shadow of the HIV/AIDS crisis, our old school friends in the local LGBT community are well versed in coping with evolving norms and precautions as part of public health. Moreover, as HIV/AIDS transitioned to a virus infecting gay white males to one that now predominately impacts communities of color . . . There is still overwhelming support in fundraising from the gay community.
Locally, we notice an abundance of caution at a local hangout that has captured the attention of TKC readers.
Background: Missie B's is Kansas City's "Premier Gay Bar" and this message not only addresses the current coronavirus pandemic but also speaks to concern for equity within the LGBT community in the aftermath of civil unrest.
Checkit:
"For months now we have had multiple on going conversations with our new entertainment director and have tried to listen to what our community wants from us.
"This has led us to wanting to be more proactive towards communities we have not properly championed for in the past. It is with extreme humility and accountability of ourselves that will be implementing the following changes in phases as we work towards re-opening Missies to its fullest and safest capacity."
Check the latest Missie B's social media post to look at protocols for the "new normal" among the Kansas City LGBT club scene.
Moreover, this cautious approach to reopening should be an example to other bars who haven't shown nearly as much concern for their patrons.
Developing . . .
tkc readers can't wait to go there on the sneak.
