Bookstore owner saved by USPS during COVID: Cuts to post office are an attack on small business

COVID-19 could've closed the book on Danny Caine's entrepreneurial journey, the literature lover said, but while the pandemic rages, the U.S. Postal Service is keeping him moving to the next chapter. As a small business owner, his story is like many across the country, said Caine, owner and operator of Raven Book Store in Lawrence.

  1. Every business had to and still is making cuts, quit making issues out of the postal service who has to deal with thousands of employees with covid and the same poor management techniques that they had for decades. It’s not political, it’s a failed system that loses billions every year.

  2. Stick $5,000 in an envelope and mail it to yourself. If you don't have the balls to do this, maybe you'd better vote in person.

  3. Most on this blog don't have a pot to piss in, let alone $5K.

  4. If the gubmint can't run it efficiently then it doesn't need to be in that line of work.

  5. This story is complete and utter nonsense. I'm a bookseller and I mail books regularly without any problem. However, if the post office closed tomorrow I would simply use UPS or Fed Ex. This is just another example of the biased media being a mouthpiece for the Democratic Party.

  6. Raven (aka indoctrination station...just check their 'selection') is delusional if they think Amazon is the only one eating their lunch. Better, cheaper, faster sources include Half Price Books, thriftbooks.com and ebay. You know why UPS and FEDEX are more expensive Raven? Because they are not subsidized by the taxpayer.

And quit bitching about the margins you need - people also need margin to live, and that does not come through purchasing books (or anything) at full retail just to get the in-store experience.

  7. The story doesn't mention that auditors found the post office had $26 billion in unnecessary overtime. Hmm, that's the same amount as the proposed bailout by Nancy Pelosi and the rest of the waste our money, out of touch, career politicians.

  8. ^^Cry about it bitch. It does nothing. Just realize you'll be dead soon and do something more productive.

  9. The Startland story was rewarmed leftovers from an KPR radio piece a week back. The only thing they dropped was the reference to media mail, which is how Raven apparently ships books. USPS media mail is basically opportune lift, and cheap, so it can be slow. KPR tried to work the slowness of media mail into a political theme about mail-in ballots...sorry bitches, fake news.

The problem with the USPS isn't money it's the idiots who work there.I mean where the hell do they find these deadbeats?

  11. ^^and you are only seeing the half of it...the remainder sit on their asses collecting workers comp, doing nothing for 'injuries' they make up. The whole thing is a scam.

  12. The only service industry worse than the Post Office is the DMV. The feet shufflers behind the counter have bad attitudes, aren't polite, don't care if your package is delivered or that you get mail. The layoffs were to get the feet shufflers moving a bit faster. My mail carrier regularly has to double back to deliver another piece of mail.

  14. Hey buddy the so-called cuts to USPS are simply USPS contractual obligation to give priority to Amazon and Chinsese small package deliveries. Get with the 2020s
