KANSAS CITY SATURDAY QUESTION: ALL EVICTIONS ARE AN ACT OF VIOLENCE?!?!?

And so the rent/housing crisis restarts in Kansas City and across the nation . . . We pick out the most provocative talking point from local activists, share more resources and ask our blog community . . . Are evictions really an act of violence???

Checkit:

KC Tenants Argue Against Eviction . . .

KC Tenants arrived on the scene as a Sheriff and a representative of Reliable Properties pounded on Krisi’s door. They made a plan: they would call animal control to take her dog and deem it “abandoned” while the landlord’s representative would change the locks. The plan meant that when Krisi got home from work, she would be locked out of her own home-- without her clothes, medicine, food, important paperwork, and without her dog.

“Not my problem she doesn’t have anywhere to go.”
“She can go screw someone else out of rent.”
“People are so privileged these days, just look at the Democratic Party.”
“My heart doesn’t bleed for these people.”

These are just some of the comments made by the landlord’s representative as he executed the eviction.

Ultimately, because KC Tenants was there in solidarity and filmed the interaction once Krisi arrived, she was able to remove her most important belongings. But a police officer told her to “bust a move,” intent on finishing the job. The Sheriff berated her, telling her she was trespassing as she packed up her children’s clothes.

On Tuesday morning Krisi started her journey as a homeless single mother. She is now spending almost $600/week to live in an extended stay hotel near her job.

ALL EVICTIONS ARE AN ACT OF VIOLENCE. With every eviction we allow right now, we are saying we believe landlords’ profits are more important than people’s lives. And that ain’t right . . .

  1. of course not.

They're really arguing for free housing but at the expense of people who entered into a contract. We're really talking about theft.

Not that easy. COVID-19 complicates matters even worse. The government obviously has a part to play since they mandated the eviction moratoriums in the first place.

  6. Definitely more than two sides to this growing problem.

    1. Personal accountability or lack thereof. Good point on the $600/wk
    2. Gaming the system.
    3. Lack of jobs, income, employment.
    4. Inconsiderate and unprofessional attitude of LE to citizens.
    5. Landlords needing to make their bank payments and expenses.
    6. Social unrest from a large homeless poor population.
    7. Polarized public opinion. Only see one side of a problem.

Russia isn't communist anymore. When they were, they had mass starvation.

China was allowed to engage capitalism and their mass starvations (multiple) ended.

Democrats lie so much they don't even know they help the Right Everytime they talk.

Now if she fails to pay she is out immediately again. The way things should be.

I think both sides of the debate agree. If you wait the 10 days after a judgment for the Sheriff to arrive and throw your things out on the lawn, you deserve to be evicted.

  25. 11:00, I’m just now seeing your question, and I think Grinch gave a great answer at 11:14. Even if it couldn’t be $600/week, replace the amount with $100, $200, whatever. Eviction is a pain for the landlord and most would probably avoid the hassle if they knew their tenant was TRYING to pay.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Evictions are not an act of violence. They are a result of a tenant not paying their rent or being in violation of the lease agreement they signed. It's a contract agreement they agreed to and have to honor.

Look it's like this, nobody is never surprised to be evicted. I have evicted a few over the years and they always know it was going to happen weeks before it does. Acting shocked and so forth is just a clown show while trying to play the victim game. Us landlords never want to throw anyone out we try and work with tenants but sometimes the tenant won't even try to make efforts at working for a solution.

  27. Diane Charity was one the main ones cheering on eviction in the East Patrol debacle... now because renters cant keep their promise to pay, she’s against eviction. What a fucking hypocrite!

  28. It’s an act of violence to not pay your rent. When these losers are confronted by the landlord the losers proceed to destroy the property that they swore they would pay monthly for.

  29. The operative words here are not "eviction" and "landlord". The operative words are "single mother". Why are so many single mothers, and what can we do to make sure that women don't end up in this situation? I know, I know. Iam being elitist, sexist, racist and every other "ist" there is. But women, children, and (believe it or not) men do better in a traditional family situation. Please, ladies, marriage first, then children. It would solve about 90% of the social problems we are experiencing. If he is not good marriage material, don't have sex with him. You can beat me up for my political incorrectness, but you all know it's true.

  31. Lots of red flags in this story. What sort of rental in KC costs $6k to move into? How did she come up with that kind of money just a few months ago? Where is the father (or at least his child support)? Who’s going to manage the thousands of dollars she’s raising on GFM as it’s obvious that managing money is not her strong suit.

  39. "With every eviction we allow right now, we are saying we believe landlords’ profits are more important than people’s lives. And that ain’t right . . ."

Oh yeah, because all landlords are making a killing on renting properties, right?

I literally make beer money each month on the 12 rental properties I own. This year I had to put roofs on three properties, have trees cut down on multiple properties (at the city's direction), replaced gutters and re-painted multiple properties...It never stops. A non-paying tenant called me to tell me their AC wasn't working. The AC was shot because their kid decided it was cool to watch the condenser fan blades spray the dirt and gravel he was dumping in there for fun. Parents took zero responsibility and are demanding I fix their AC, and they haven't paid rent for August. Suspect it will cost more to repair than the tenants currently owe in rent. Not sure why I keep the properties.

    1. Insurance usually pays for new roofs. But i get your point had rentals years ago. Your not making much but you are. Your gaining equity but not cash. Over time if property values keep going up and you pay down your mortgages there is light at the end of the tunnel. Its a 10 to 15 year play so be patient. Good luk

  40. I'm Rich, bitch !!!

    ReplyDelete
  41. Insurance does not pay for new roofs. Most policies exclude them or limit the liability. Believe me, you don't make money when people don't pay. The gummit wants their property taxes, the landlord has to carry insurance (at the very least liability in case somebody slips and falls, etc.), and the gas and electricity must be paid or the pipes will freeze. The lawyer wants money to file an eviction, and it is just a given that there will be repairs and lots of clean up when an eviction occurs. This is why landlords want "luxury" units unaffordable to regular folks. The chances of having problems are much less, even though the tenants can be real "Karens". Deadbeat tenants can be real "Karens" too. A lot of landlords who own these properties are "just folks". Black landlords will give you just as much of an "earful" as those cruel, unfeeling white guys do. They have no liking or respect for their "brothers" who are actually stealing from them when they don't pay. Landlords don't "make it up" when they sell the property every time, and it is difficult to make the case for waiting 10 or 15 years for a profit. Would you work for someone who promised you your paycheck in 10 years?

    1. 927 here. I think you should shop around for a different insurance agent. Its been sometime since i had properties but never had limited roof coverage. I totally get what you are saying. It sucks. My point was you have 12 rentals. If avg is 50k then 600k. If each only increases 1k a year is 15k. You have potential 225k. That was my direction. What I found to be the best idea for myself instead of renting is to owner finance. Ask for 20 to 25% down charge about 8 to 10 % no refinance clause for 5yrs so you make interest on your money. Have a lawyer write the contract with strong evicion process spelled out. Whether its 45 or 60 days. After said time you evict keep all payments and down payments put the property back on the market owner financed again. I've known people who have sold the same house 3 or 4 times this way. This puts something on the line for your tenants ie down payment to pay up.

    2. Should be 180k not 225k. Did 15 instead of 12 homes
