KANSAS CITY ELECTION #TBT: VOTERS OPPOSED STREETCAR EXTENSION WITHOUT CITYWIDE APPROVAL!!!

Amid all of the toy train hype and celebration, let's not forget that in 2017, a majority of voters passed a measure requiring a citywide vote before extending the streetcar. There were 51.3 percent of Kansas City voters who approved the measure.

A portion of the sloppy election language was thrown out in court but there was never any ruling on the main clause of the vote.

Not that it rally matter inasmuch as Democracy has always been a cruel joke . . . Still, here's a bit more hype and perspective from hipsters who take most of their cues from press releases without bothering to pose questions or provide context.

Kansas City receives $51 million in federal funding for streetcar extension

The U.S. Department of Transportation's Federal Transit Administration would allocate a total of $400 million to four transit infrastructure projects across the country on Wednesday. Receiving some of that sweet money is Kansas City, as the streetcar extension gets $50.8 million to help extend the route from Union Station to UMKC.

  2. Some clever lawyers found a way to use the concept of tax improvement district to their wealthy clients' advantage. Carve out a tax district for a multi-million dollar project, then put it to a vote. The "yes" side will be extremely well funded and professionally organized, while the "no" side will be neither. The voters who will be most seriously affected by the higher taxes involved either do not have a vote (businesses) or (permanent residents) will be vastly outnumbered by the temporary residents (renters) who really have no interest in the long term viability of their neighborhoods.

    We'll see how much public money Kansas City ends up fronting to this development that its citizens have said they do not need or want.

  4. In KCMO it really doesn't make any difference whether the public has a chance to vote for something or not.
    In the case of THE streetcar, as the earlier commentator said, a state statute was stretched way beyond its actual purpose and then the vote was rigged.
    In the case of the GO bonds, the residents voted for it followed by the KCMO electeds spending the money any way they wanted.
    Not much difference there!
    Screwed and lied to up front or after the fact.

  10. Still a toy train, just longer. Outdated expensive fixed transit system. Kansas City just copies, never innovative or insight. And yet we still have dreadful roads and sidewalks. City promised sidewalks if we voted for the GO Bond, and yet still doing 311 backlog and not enough money to fix neighborhood sidewalks. Shining new objects while ignoring basic infrastructure needs. Toy train....is just that.

  12. Since the coronavirus and the Mayor has made all bus transit free, I've noticed many homeless people at bus stops waiting to ride the free buses. When the toy train gets extended to Brookside and the Plaza, those white people won't ride it if it's free and full of homeless or poor people.
