Kansas City Blames Guns For Violence Spike & Doubles Down On Buyback Bad Idea

A glimpse at both sides of this strategy . . .

"Early research on gun buybacks, mostly from the 1990s, largely finds these programs ineffective at curbing gun violence. Recent research frames gun buybacks in a more favorable light. On their own, buybacks might not be effective if the goal is to use them to directly reduce violent crime. But research shows buybacks can help if they’re part of a broader effort to reduce gun violence. They can influence public perception of how authorities are dealing with gun violence and serve as opportunities to educate communities about gun violence reduction strategies, according to academic researchers."

KC churches, businesses starting off push for murder-free weekend with gun buyback

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Leaders in Kansas City are taking a different approach to fighting Kansas City's violent crime. The idea could put a big chunk of change in your pocket. The goal is to buy 15-20 illegal guns. Pastor Marvin Kirkwood of Contagious Life Church has made it his mission to bring people closer [...]

  1. Right! Because all of the thugs will be rushing to turn in their guns. Brilliant!

  2. I planned and supervised KC's only gun buy back in 1994. It was at Arrowhead stadium. In 2 days we took in just under 2000 firearms. The vast majority were hunting weapons and old handguns. Many of the people turning in guns were widows trading in their late husbands' hunting firearms for some quick cash. We were paying either $50 or $100 depending on the type of firearm. Very few "assault" rifles and only a handful of stolen guns (we checked all the serial numbers in NCIC). Perhaps in conjunction with other programs they might be effective. We had no measurable impact on violence due to this program.

    2. Glad you contributed... I have a few questions..

Why would you buy back hunting weapons?
Why not just limit it to pistols or assault style weapons ? Why is checking the serial numbers important?

I was thinking a buyback for pistols and “assault style” no questions asked, no age restrictions... but actually partnering with businesses in the community where they can drop them off anytime and get a money order printed out. Doesn’t that make sense ?

      Thanks

  3. Even ghetto hood rats can see how stupid this is. Why would they sell their gun for $100 when they can rob someone and keep their gun?

  4. From the KC Star article

"With 6 killings in 26 hours, KC suffers deadliest weekend of already bloody year"

"Gun violence will be the subject of a new, statewide journalism project The Star is undertaking in Missouri this year in partnership with the national service program Report for America and sponsored in part by Missouri Foundation for Health. As part of this project, The Star will seek the community’s help.

  5. I swear this town and it's leaders can come up with every other lame idea to curb violence instead of doing what needs to be done. Millions of dollars have been wasted on lame brain ideas instead of doing what needs to be done. But real police work isn't allowed in this country because the liberal courts and black leaders all label that sort of law enforcement as racists.

Wise up people the thugs and crooks will always have guns till someone comes along with bigger balls to take the guns away from them and bitch slap their ass into a jail cell.

  6. This "program" is about as poorly thought-out as KC NoVa was.
That idea was that thugs would betray their homies and give up their street life of crime and violence in exchange for some $8/hour job at a warehouse.
    Not many takers there.
As another commentator pointed out, the bad guys 'aint going to be participating in this joke either.
Just another way to waste taxpayer money trying to bribe criminals into behaving like normal citizens.
The silly Star and their "gun violence" mantra completely and consciously misses the real problem.
There'll be no impact of homicides at all.
    Sad.

  10. the preacher has a good idea and intentions but something tells me a lawman will find away to make it his business too. i'm thinking the lawman will be hiding in walmart somewheres when the gift cards are used. on second thought, there ain't no lawman that good.

  11. The intentions are good. The idea is founded in flawed thinking. The execution will be abysmal as a gun buybacks are.

  12. I’ll take $100,000 for all my guns, the suppressors stay with me. I’ll just go to cabelas in kck and get all new ones!

  13. Go all the way and eliminate all guns from the population Nationwide. The same criminal demographic will still have guns. This would solve the problem how?

Verbalize the demographic and the geographic. Concentrate all efforts on the who and the where.

This is not an all of us problem, stop acting like it is. Again verbalize who and where the bad actors are. There is more dancing around these facts than all of the episodes of Soul Train ever made combined. Now that's visual and a clue.

  18. buy back 15 - 20 illegal guns and have a weekend with no killings? It's doable.
just for experiments sake try the following -
to really make it work one could halt all liquor sales thursday 8:00 p.m. and resume selling monday morning - then watch out for monday evening and tuesday for the killings to start up again.

  19. 8:39 thank you. I didn't want to do it and knew it was a waste of time but was ordered to do so there you go. It turned out I was right after all.

  20. Nope, it's a tired old idea that sounds good but doesn't work.

    What works is law enforcement.

  21. This was pretty new back then so we took what would came in. Any firearm can kill a person. Obviously this was done by the police department and when a weapon is recovered it has to be checked in case it is stolen. We did not ask for any id. from the participants. There were also safety concerns about taking in unknown weapons that had to be first rendered safe by the trained firearms experts from the crime lab on site. This is an issue wherever or who ever recovers the weapon. I'm not saying this is the only way but again in 1994 it was a new approach. Other ways may be more effective.

  24. Bandit, getting rid of the police would mean getting rid of Petersucker too but I digress, the 2nd amendment will and always has been our saving grace. We’ll just defend ourselves once the popo get eliminated and watch how fast the despicable dimwits start screaming for the police to come back.

My libtard friend said he wants the police defunded and I reminded him of the 2nd amendment, he started stuttering during his rant, stopped, and then he changed his tune. Funny and true story.

  25. I was sarcastically pointing out that the criminal class is creating a bigger problem for themselves by defunding the police. Now there are more people armed that won't necessarily play by the rules that the police did. Disposing of bodies in New York has never been a problem.

  26. Shawnee had a gun buyback maybe 20 years ago. Shawnee citizens came 1st. They ran out of Walmart gift cards, which was the "currency" to buy back. I was told I could donate for free, my Norinco SKS which I paid $85 for in 1981. I decided to keep it. Its now worth $500 on the market. Glad I didnt trade it in!

You need to take in the criminals - not their guns

  31. Not a fan of Taurus. They seem to have bad customer service and sometimes when you pull the trigger they do nothing. Ruger LCR revolvers are sweet. But nothing like a Glock 40 in 10mm with hardcast bullets!

  32. People by S&W J-frame, the "small detective specials" in .38 caliber - only to find they are very hard to shoot accurately. Get a .380 walther and you cant go wrong. I have a few guns to sell to the buyback, they are junk, but they still kinda shoot and are like rabbit guns....not needed anymore

10mm has good ballistics, but can be hard to find sometimes. I went with a Sig 226 in .40 for a full size.
