Activist Clay Chastain Launches Petition Lawsuit Against Kansas City

The latest legal move from this town's most prolific petitioner who seems exceptionally concerned about the decline of direct democracy in Kansas City.

Checkit:

Today, Chastain files in federal court an historic 1st Amendment lawsuit against City Hall.

Today, KC Activist Clay Chastain is filing in US District Court the most important piece of litigation in Kansas City's history. Chastain is suing the City for openly attacking the democratic petition process and deliberately violating his 1st Amendment Constitutional right to petition his government.

On July 22, 2020, (after holding a valid petition hostage for 452 days) Mayor Lucas and the City Council killed it. That petition (to breathe new life into a dying City) was signed by Chastain and several thousand Kansas City voters. The City refused to place it before citywide voters because the petition is politically contentious in that it seeks to revitalize our City (and the eastside) around the most advanced, environmentally-sound and convenient public transportation system in the nation.

The petition process is meaningless, if petitioners submit a petition to the government and then the government, not the voters, decide its merits. Shutting down the petition process is the first step a controlled state uses to silence the voices of the people.

He would make a better Mayor.

  12. "most advanced environmentally-sound and convenient public transportation system in the nation." but no one knows what that is or where it goes, not even clay with the layout he put together with a few colored markers. That is b/c the city evolved effectively making it virtually impossible.. Give it up, most advanced and environmentally sound, not going to happen. Find joy in the most advanced building code they just passed and have no idea what that really means even though it must make look KC way up to date again, even leading edge. the KC downtown plaza hype is over. You want an environmentally-sound and convenient public transportation system in the nation," I-70 should bypass downtown KC entirely from lawrence, go through South KC out in Stillwell land and build a whole new city there, shop at Mernards, and safely/enjoyably walk or take the most environmentally sound PT to taco bell.

  13. just b/c there a is/was a leg of clay's transportation plan that goes from union station to the zoo, does not make it convenient or capable of revitalizing the East side. Just b/c he thinks building a leg to the 'nicer and smaller' airport facility for a regional area purportedly planned for growth, does not mean it is a prudent or capable of being "most advanced environmentally-sound and convenient public transportation system in the nation." Why would anyone try to even claim that as a goal with a line drawn from the dinosaur exhibit to the zoo and then off to the chiefs stadium? So Clay needs money for some demographic and transportation studies.
