TKC SATURDAY NIGHT PLAYLIST!!! INSIDER: MORE CLOSINGS AHEAD AS PLAZA DEVASTATED BY KANSAS CITY RIOTS!!!

Quick preview for the week ahead as the ongoing pandemic and continued protest make it harder to conduct biz as usual in Kansas City.

After nearly more than half a dozen businesses have closed on the Country Club Plaza since the start of the year . . . The pandemic Summer slow down and a harsh election season has more shops ready to close. Very soon, a major retailer will announce a stunning construction reversal that threatens to leave an EPIC empty space in this town's oldest entertainment district.

However, we can't blame this all on social justice protest, riots and conflict with police. Retail is dead and the generic fare now found on the Plaza is easily duplicated in the burbs. Still, that doesn't make the loss of JOBS any more welcomed.

And so, tonight our playlist is dedicated to this old school stomping ground that has endured violence, monument rename politics and the unwanted challenge of serving as the city's battle ground for social justice.

As always, thanks for reading this week and have a safe and fun Saturday night.

  2. Manny Johnson ;

The color of one’s skin is no bar to a young man or woman dreaming of making a better world. Like other Negroes, I experienced and saw many injustices and inequities around me based upon color, not ability. I was told that “the decadent capitalist system is responsible,” that “mass pressure” could force concessions but “that just prolongs the life of capitalism”; that I must unite and work with all those who more or less agree that capitalism must go.

Little did I realize until I was deeply enmeshed in the Red Conspiracy, that just and seeming grievances are exploited to transform idealism into a cold and ruthless weapon against the capitalist system—that this is the end toward which all the communist efforts among Negroes are directed.

Indeed, I had entered the red conspiracy in the vain belief that it was the way to a “new, better and superior” world system of society. Ten years later, thoroughly disillusioned, I abandoned communism. The experiences of those years in “outer darkness” are like a horrible nightmare. I saw communism in all its naked cruelty, ruthlessness and utter contempt of Christian attributes and passions. And, too, I saw the low value placed upon human life, the total lack of respect for the dignity of man, the betrayal of trust, the terror of the Secret Police and the bloody hand of the assassin, during and since, those fateful years when I embraced communism.

  3. Great music pick Tony. The Plaza is doomed. KC leaders read the instruction book for "how to become Detroit" What these geniuses fail to understand is, that once this kind of decline sets in you don't ever get it back. Nordstroms would be insane to not pull out of the Plaza. There will be even more now. I know of one restaurant down there considering shutting the doors. A real Mayor, a real leader that really understands how the world really works would not have allowed this disgrace to happen. KC now cares more about the lowest element in town and not the ones who pay the bills, build businesses and make the city run.

Yet, your still a slave to sin. Sin has enslaved you. Sin controls you and has its way with you. But, what Jesus did once the cross frees you from sin and slavery. He who is free is free indeed

  6. Nordstroms will pull out, and the plaza will be left with an abandoned construction site and a vacated street that will be eventually filled with cheaply constructed and overpriced apartments whose only asthetic value will be "modern shabby chic".

You can't blame the protests / riots for most of the current situation, a management company better suited to managing indoor malls and a few YEARS of allowing "urban" youths to make it uninhabitable after dark bear a majority of the responsibility. The protests were just the final nail in the coffin.

  7. Even if your white people will mistreat you. If your ugly, old, poor, short and fat then your treated like rubbish even if white. Even in the corporate offices, 98% of all CEO's are over 6'3" tall. Malcom Gladwell wrote an interesting book on how superficial people are and how they trust appearances more than anything else. Its not how well you do a job, its what you look like. White are mistreated by whites.

  8. KCMO is done, stick a fork in it.

Amazon and all the big corps and international bankers are doing great though.

Stupid fuckin useful idiots think they are protesting for the ppl but can't understand why the large corps, globalists and international bankers support them.

    3. Mayor Lucas is just using KC as the step stone to Replace Frank White Jr as county executive and the on to Emanuel Cleavers congressional post. Have any doubts? Interesting how Quinton made decisions as directed under the table with Frank White Jr to give the appearance that he is already the heir apparent. Jackson County and KC politics haven’t changed since the Pendergast Era. All Graft, Corruption and Capitalize off the bad situations in the country including never letting a disaster go to waste. Grab all that power from the real people. Quinton Lucas is too slick to stay where he’s at, big money and power swinging behind him. None of his bad decisions and will follow him his rep will be made squeaky clean with a smile. Sly tried warning us.

  14. Can't blame this on riots????? Yes you can, because that is what sent the Plaza over the edge. Started with the flash diaper brats years ago when the police were told you can't touch blacks and they were left to rule the city. Jealous little brats who won't work but yet want everything.

with the atmosphere of chaos and lawlessness, fewer people will be going to cultural events and museums.

for example, seniors who used to go to cultural venues downtown or on main street are going to be hesitant. small theaters, small art spaces, interesting restaurants, and so on may see their audiences cut.

When it gets to the bottom line, we're going to find out that, once again, the Legal Department at City Hall didn't sign in the right document in the right place, and there is no recourse to recover the taxpayer's dollars!

  32. The "Flash Mobs" started the decline of the Plaza with violence and mayhem and the violent protests, looting and rioting put the final fork in it.

The Plaza was unique with its open air, upscale restaurants and shops that one could not find in the suburbs. It was a Friday and Saturday night destination for dating couples.

Shoppers went there just to view the beauty of the architecture.

The Plaza was intentionally ruined by a certain destructive segment of society who have no respect for property, businesses and their fellow Kansas Citians.

In the end, it might be for the best that JC Nichols name was removed from a shopping district with a future of pawn shops, liquor stores, Dollar Tree with bars on the windows and prostitution.

Thank you Mayor Lucas for leading your merry band of protestors to destroy the Plaza and spread corona virus across the metro. Job well done.

  33. With companies recognizing their employees are productive working at home remote, there will be no new high rise office buildings as there is not a need for companies to invest in brick and mortar.

Look at Cerner; their employees will be working remote until Jan 1.

  36. Agreed, it's hard to pinpoint any specific blame when there were multiple factors: COVID, online retail, recession, crime, mobbing, protests, looting. Add to that: newer suburban malls with anchor tenants, suburban flight from earnings tax & subpar kc public schools. It goes way deeper. Stick with me ...

Still, it is sad to see what looks like a viable and historical area with parks, fountains, walkays, greenspace, and boulevards start to go through a rough patch. They'll be asking for money.

Teen mobs were the big turnoff for weekend shoppers and diners because of the very personal fears of being racially targetted for assault. It's a thing for whites too - just an occasional geographic concern and not as routine, pervasive, random, or dangerous by any stretch.

What was it... millions in CID breaks the city gave for the wealthy white owners of the "blighted" plaza Intercontinental hotel? And the the Shields backed proposal for an 80 million dollar Plaza hotel complex? I think the days of developer bonds and subsidies should face real scrutiny after the airport fiasco.

There's too much debt service and not enough tax base. Do voters even care? How the city will adapt financially is a whole other issue. One big house of cards unless the economy spikes or helicopter money arrives. Doubling your bets when your down never works out, unless you're the Council and Joe Taxpayer gets the lien. Moral hazard.

At some point one could hope that taxpayers are gonna wake up and ask: if the DC swamp can print money at will for banks and corporate payroll protection, why is my hard-earned dollar leaving my pocket and going to DC?

Why is my congessperson always smiling? What is that big sucking sound in KC, Detroit, Chicago, STL? That sound is money leaving your community and disappearing in the event horizon of the black hole called the swamp. Pfffft. Not gonna be fixed. Read on.

Back to KC: Now opponents need only dredge up past TIF and CID giveaways and maybe voters will get a clue they're getting fleeced. Maybemuch council members will start get some real flack about how tax money goes to debt payment and interest? Money that could recirculate in the community through jobs corps, etc.

Maybe it's time for KC's diverse bloggers to name and shame past Mayors and Council scofflaws, black and white, that took money from the poor and middle class and got us in this fix while wealthy developers lined their pockets and dropped a few thousand bucks in the right campaign coffers.

Is this not how local racism and predatory capitalism work hand in hand against the interests of the poor and middle class? They take your money and promise offsetting tax revenues and jobs. How has that worked out? Do the books balance? If not, who profited when the taxpayers lost?

JC Nichols might have physically separated the races, but there are financial ways too and they have bankrupted the city and mich of the middle class. You gotta have visuals before people understand. Names. Faces. $ amounts. Campaign contributors. Follow the money. Maybe we need outside audits of the bid process too.

Time to invest our community money back into our neighborhoods. Why float deep-pocket hi-rise developers living six-figure paycheck to six-figure paycheck on city funds while joe sixpack needs hernia surgery and is wondering why he has a $5k deductible on his $1000/month health insurance plan. If he's got health insurance. Or a job.

That means supporting small donation candidates. You might not like their race or politics, but they are better for you than what you got. The thing is, your party-branded politics is designed by big donors to program your brain to not think about policy. Coke or Pepsi?

So, what will become of the Plaza? Mostly office, more mixed use, less retail? It is a flaspoint and microcosm of what we, our city and country are all going thru, fallout from a leveraged bet on a future that never materialized.
