Until now . . .

Change.Org: Retain Chief Smith and keep the KCPD out of City Control

The argument in support of this campaign is written at around a 7th-grade reading level yet still manages to convey a great level of passion for this crusade.

Checkit:

"We are tired of our Police Department being treated like they are the problem. They are NOT the problem. The officers in the Kansas City Police Department work hard every day and keep our city safe. They do this job because they love it and want to help people. The police are being blamed for the lack of economic equity in the minority communities. The police do not make those policy decisions. The city legislature does.

"The Mayor and City Council have allowed lawlessness to take over and that lawlessness has caused nothing but chaos. We watched as criminals destroyed the plaza area, we watched as our officers had acid, firecrackers, pig heads and so much more thrown at them. We have watched as the complete lack of action of our City Council has truly been permission for crime. We will watch no longer.

"The leadership displayed by Chief Smith is second to none and he seems to be the only city leader that is concentrating on what it will take to keep our city safe. He seems to be the only one that is intent on restoring our city, holding criminals accountable for their actions, and decreasing crime. He seems to be the only one that is trying to fix the true issues in our city . . .

"They (The Mayor and City Council) don’t understand nonlethal force or when it is necessary. They simply do not truly understand how a police department functions. We are seeing local control over police departments fail over and over. We are asking that you stand up and publicly say that you do not support local control of the police department."

You decide . . .

  1. Finally!

If we're going to have a "difficult conversation" we need to hear from both sides.

      True.

But signing a petition is a lot different than those hundred of people who are willing to get out on the street, during a pandemic no less, and oppose the chief.

    2. The chief is not going to resign, the mayor doesn't have the votes on the board to dismiss him. He's not going anywhere.

    3. Be quiet, I'm still trying to forget it was the police riot that caused the chaos on the plaza.

Overall I think the Chief is doing a good job but he needs more media training.

I like this story but I just wish the Chief had more freedom to speak his mind on a lot of local issues. And some of the ways that police handled the protests obviously need to be fixed. They go better as they went along but those first few nights where a disaster.

Still, I support the Chief and think he should stay.

Agree with most of what your wrote but the people who want him gone aren't interested in real debate, they have an agenda.

I guess that's your stupid ass way to say the police should not have rioted and attacked the people??

Could we also take Kansas City government out of the hands of local control too? It's blatantly obvious that they can't handle the job.

  4. I don't see Chief Smith going anywhere soon unless he totally screws up. Changing a Chief in the middle of whats going on now isn't a smart move and the PD as a whole isn't the real issue for crime being out of control they are just being made the scrape goats of it all. Out of app half a million people living in KC 5K in signatures is far from true representation of the over all public wants.

  5. KCPD Chief Smith should be fired for kneeling in the street during the riots. He also needs to be investigated for robberies that went on. What was he doing and what did he tell the rest of the police force to do? I support the police but I don't support a dirty cop and he is a dirty cop. Keep KCPD out of city control but get rid of Smith he's dirty.

  6. The overreach and extreme "demands" of BLM and its groupies have caused the "movement" to fade even faster than most.
    The chief isn't going anywhere.
There isn't going to be "local control" of the KCPD.
Money isn't coming out of the police budget for social workers, housing support, and funding for worthless anti-crime nonprofits.
Gwen Grant and her little mob of clueless shouters aren't going to get the time of day.
The BLM insiders have made lots of money and the usual "useful idiots" have been taken advantage of once again.
But keep your cardboard and markers at the ready.
In KCMO there's a new "movement" every day.

  7. Local control is coming. Budgets will get cut. The Chief will leave eventually having done nothing to reduce crime. More KCPD officers will be shot. Morale will get to an all time low and homicides will continue unabated to 200

  10. Mayor Quinton Lucas is incompetent. He is confused on what to do.He is too easily stressed out to be a leader, let alone a strong leader. Mayor Lucas is taking Kansas City in a negative direction . A direction from which we may not recover. And unfortunately our Mayor is not aware of the terrible results his ineffective leadership is inflicting on all of us. Wake up, please.

  19. All of the unconscious racial bias against Chief Smith is causing the mob to hyperventilate again. He's going to get a skin transplant to a darker shade on Thursday, so just sit tight and then you'll be happy.

  20. Keep the chief

  21. Thanks to whoever wrote the petition.

The vast majority support our KCPD.

It's a thankless job to be a police officer and we appreciate their efforts every day.

  22. I hope the Chief knelt to get a good view of some chick in a short dress bending over.

  23. Cant have both, local control and the chief serves the pleasure of the mayor. Chief will be canned under local control and replaced with another incompetent diversity hire for sjw points, probably a trans mtf black.

  27. At the end of the day, the criminals, the gangsters, the con-men politicians and the walk-a-way fathers are the ones who want to the local control of the police. These folks already have a prosecutor and a council who look the other way on crime.

  28. ^^OK Boomer.

  29. I support the Chief. What they need to do is get some of the lazy worthless commanders off their asses and out on the streets. They could cut the number of captains and take-home vehicles and save the taxpayers a bunch of money. If the city does get control of the department they need to go over their budget with a fine-toothed comb.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Anyone who thinks the Mayor is the head of municipal governance is ignorant.

The Mayor of Kansas City, Missouri is more figure head. Politically speaking he is weak. I am not dissing Mayor Lucas, who I like very much.

However most power in KC is with the City Manager and not the Mayor.

As we discuss the local control issue, how does the KCFD look to you? Who does the Fire Chief report to? It is not the Mayor or the City Council.

But who does the local control trolls want the Police Chief to report too??

I support our Chief of Police and the Board of Police Commissioners as well.
