TKC EXCLUSIVE!!! KANSAS CITY MANDATORY 'IMPLICIT BIAS TRAINING' FOR CITY HALL COMING SOON DESPITE (OR BECAUSE OF) WORKER COMPLAINTS!!!
Like everyone else, workers at City Hall have endured hardship this year. Across the board cuts and severe restrictions over movement have demoralized employees. Now, a compulsory training program threatens to make working at 12th & Oak just a bit more arduous.
To wit . . .
CITY HALL THREATENS TO REQUIRE "IMPLICIT BIAS TRAINING" FOR WORKERS IN THE AFTERMATH CIVIL UNREST & SOCIAL JUSTICE PROTEST!!!
Check the legislation . . .
Ordinance #200510: Directing the City Manager to develop and implement a plan to provide implicit bias training to all City employees and report to the City Council within 60 days.
Championed by 3rd District Council Lady Robinson, here a preview of another City Hall mandate on employee thinking in the works . . .
"Implicit biases are the product of learned associations and social conditioning and most people are unaware that they hold them . . . Implicit bias training would educate City employees on their unconscious thoughts of race, gender, religion or appearances that affect their decision-making processes and quality of customer service and how to practice tolerance by treating all with dignity and generating respect . . ."
Actually, that doesn't sound too bad inasmuch as developing new personal skills for workers might benefit residents citywide as we count the days & months for a response from the 311 help line.
Moreover . . .
INSIDERS WARN THAT BOTH KCFD & KCPD WILL OPT OUT AND CLAIM THEY DO THEIR OWN IN-HOUSE TRAINING!!!
Still, with City Hall morale at an time low, department managers are whispering to council that now might not be the best time for political reeducation. KCMO is struggling to maintain infrastructure and answer increased demands for service within the parameters of a lower budget. Skeptics of this effort believe that the order to change employee worldviews might backfire and negatively impact an already tense workforce.
For now, the legislation is on hold until next week's Finance, Governance and Public Safety Committee meeting.
