KC journalist Lisa Benson releases tell-all book Fired Over White Tears

Lisa in the city. // Courtesy Sloane Heller Media Lisa Benson thought if she worked hard and played by the rules, she could avoid the racial pitfalls of a Black woman in her career field. She was wrong. And now she's written a book about her experience: "Anchored in Bias: Fired Over White Tears."

  1. Dear god, can’t she just admit it was her fault for sucking so bad at her job, nobody believes her

  5. I'm laughing at her too hard to speak. She got the job because she was black. She lost the job because she was not good enough to keep it.

  6. It looks like Harris Faulkner sure kicked some butt as a journalist in KC and then moved on to bigger and better things. No one seemed to hold her race against her. Same goes for the election of Obama. If America were that racist, there's no way Obama would have been elected twice. Quit the victimhood game.

Right. She was passed over because she was black. Not because she was incompetent. Not because she posted threats of arson. Not because she and her husband refused to file their taxes for the past 5 years. She's not trouble.
She was passed over because she's black.

  10. Television News is a Vicious Game

Benson had originally filed a complaint with KSHB/E.W. Scripps over discrimination in employment promotion.

Benson says she was ultimately fired after she shared an article (written by someone else) on her personal Facebook page.

She states that 2 white females at KSHB (who she considered friends) complained to station management about the article, and one (Dubill) urged her to be fired.

Benson lost on the discrimination claim, but won on the retaliation claim in court. Crista Dubill left the station shortly thereafter as well.
