Kansas City Star Promotes Push To Fire KCPD Chief Smith

The newspaper makes an important editorial gambit . . . If this effort doesn't succeed soon, the publication risks a MASSIVE sign of the decline of their influence.

More behind the paywall . . .

Invisible man? Embattled KCPD chief faces a city sharply divided over his performance

After several nights of protest at the Country Club Plaza ended with tear gas and arrests, Kansas City Police Chief Rick Smith waded into a crowd that was demanding reform. Demonstrators wanted answers about police shootings of Black men, about Smith's lack of cooperation with the resulting investigations, and about his department's use of dangerous projectiles against the protesters.

  1. Why don't the red star push to clear Lucas and council out of office first.

  2. I think we need black leadership. It always seems to make cities better. Hahahahaha.

  3. Why not replace Jean Petersucker Baker with a good or even adequate prosecutor? She is unwilling or incapable of successful prosecution and incarceration of violent criminals

  4. The Star? Oh yeah, that's where I get those Wednesday ads I use to place on the garage floor when changing oil on bike and mowers. Very useful.

  5. Utter nonsense. Best Chief we've had in years.

  6. The Kansas City Star is a failing American newspaper. They are in bankruptcy and treat their current employees and retired employees terribly. The Star does not speak for the good, responsible residents of the Metro area. The Star does not support law and order but encourages mob violence and shootings of police. They are not good for Kansas City or the Metro area.

  7. We have blacks shooting cops, black reverends preaching racial revolution and a huge uptick in black murders - and the idiot reverends and community activists wonder why Smith does not spend a lot of time in the 'hood? Emanuel Cleaver III says that there is a lot of cop hate in the community and Smith should try to fix that. Well Cleaver III, why don't you and your peers fix it? Do something all by yourselves for once.

  8. So the Kansas City Star now supports Blacks murdering Blacks?
    WOW!

  9. ^^^^ Yup, children are being murdered asleep in their beds, and the KC Star has no problem with that, but says somehow (if it was a bad thing), it would be the Chief Of Police's fault!

  10. Haven't read the Kansas City Red Star in three years and know of no one who does. Used to see the KC Red Star in every driveway on the way to work in the early morning back when it was a honest newspaper.

  11. And exactly one of the many reasons the star is no longer important!

Here's what the editorial board won't tell you; While the Chief is the Chief of Police he has to work within the constraints of the will of the politicians.

The mayor, the council the incompetent so called prosecutor. All of these people are sworn to uphold the constitution, the county charter and city ordinances....they have abdicated that power to the thugs and bullies in the city and county.

Thugs: don't care what color you are, you don't have a right to damage, burn , disrupt businesses and traffic. Oh, hurt your feelings, get over it...grow up and be a productive member of society and quit damaging property, private or otherwise.

Quit erasing our history, good or bad!! It's how we learn from our mistakes.

Folks, start choosing your candidates more wisely! There are consequences to your vote and you are now living the result of your vote...good luck!!

  12. How is doing a a good day in a day a qualification for the leader of the KCMO police department? Health Hall's affinity to Rick Smith isn't to the advantage of Heather Hall nor her constituents. Rick Smith is a racist. North of the river is mostly white but that doesn't mean that everyone north of the river is a racist, Heather...

That is no way any stance the paper took.

  14. So police chief Rick Smith helped an old lady cross the street... and that is why the city council loves Archie Bunker for a police chief?

  15. How do we the the pinkos at the red star to shut up ?
