I guess the polite term is: Stimulus.
Local unemployment numbers from U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics are the worst this town has ever seen in the modern era or at least since they stopped smoking during newscasts . . .
May
The unemployment rate fell to 10.8% in May. 6,600 positions were added, with only 1,500 workers entering the labor force causing the unemployment rate decrease. Nonfarm payrolls increased by 22,100. The only individual sector with significant employment changes was Leisure and Hospitality which added 11,200 positions.
June (preliminary)
The unemployment rate fell to 7.8% in June. 45,700 positions were added, with only 12,500 workers entering the labor force causing the unemployment rate decrease. Nonfarm payrolls increased by 41,800. Labor categories with significant additions include Manufacturing adding 6,100 positions, Trade, Transportation, and Utilities adding 7,700 positions, and Leisure and Hospitality adding 19,000 positions.

yes, this might get hairy.
ReplyDeletebut the helicopter money of MMT now in motion could mitigate the pain to a vaccine-based recovery.
And Hallmark announces 120 being laid off today, 90 of those in Kansas City.
ReplyDeleteThis is all fine with everyone in KCMO just as long as it doesn't curb smiley selfies Lucas' appearances and opportunities to pontificate on the national TV networks.
ReplyDeleteJust have to keep those priorities straight!
And yet Republicans are not willing to continue supplementing unemployment insurance. Typical but weird in an election year.
ReplyDeleteRemember unemployment numbers only count those actively looking for work. Many more have just given up.

ReplyDeletecurrently, the $600 , in addition to regular unemployment bennies, means many lower paid workers making more money of the increased unemployment, than when they were working.
Pretty good excuse for millions to stay sitting on the couch, rather than looking for a job.
Repubs looking to end that scam --pay them 70%.
5:09 FTW
ReplyDeletethe big tech companies will be ok.
ReplyDeleteI know for a fact one of my tenants was a sanitation worker and earned $15 an hour, which I thought was decent money. Apparently during the pandemic, trash didn't need to be picked up, so he was deemed a non-essential employee. He told my other tenant that he was making twice as much sitting at home than he was going to a truck. I really feel sorry for him. Perhaps we should up their pay to $800 a week and extend those benefits though the end of the year so he can vacation the rest of the year. Remember:

^^ Hallmark doesn't need those employees. Too busy making NEWS with the carpet muncher Christmas movie. We all have our pet projects to focus on instead of maintaining current /prior business. Hocus pocus..poof we cry.
ReplyDelete^^^^^FTW
ReplyDeleteTheir are businesses that are hiring. Go look for a job.
ReplyDelete^^ You first SCUMBAG!
ReplyDeleteByron, I'm glad to note you are finally beginning to make sense. I am dumbstruck to learn that you are a landlord. I always assumed you to be dependent on govt largess, but I guess I was mistaken. I will be interested in your opinion on dealing with tenants who do not pay their rent.
ReplyDeleteFirst time I ever thought you contributed to anything on this blog. Good for you, finally!
Wait until next year when taxes are filed. Unemployment counts as income and is taxed at the same rate as a job.
ReplyDeleteI've been to numerous focus groups at Hallmark. I'm surprised KC has even 90 employees left.
ReplyDelete5:09: So if someone makes $2,000 a week and is laid off, they'll get $1,400?
ReplyDeleteWhat about when the interest payments on the debt taken to pay for the stimulus interferes with such things as SNAP, or social security, or grants to cities/states?
ReplyDeleteThe riots will begin again when the EBT dries up
Delete5:56. Thats Byrons alter ego. Byron and his disability cheating wife are waiting for OUR payments on Friday. Poor dumb Ruth Fucker is a Section 8 rockstar. He is not, never has been a landlord. He knows all about not paying rent.
ReplyDelete^^^ And you do, Basement Boi?
ReplyDeleteOr do you still just fill your squalid days posting crap and sniffing the pair of Mommy's panties you stole out of the dirty laundry?
So tell us, "Expert On Everything", who's on First?
