KC Tenants: Rally to End Evictions

"The rent is due again on August 1. Hundreds of thousands of Missouri tenants won’t be able to pay. Over 361,000 Missouri rental households are currently unable to make rent and are at risk of eviction. That’s almost 50% of all Missouri renters. Over the next four months, an estimated 243,000 evictions will be filed across Missouri, as a result of the job loss and lack of government protections throughout the Coronavirus pandemic.

"Here in KC, our Jackson County eviction moratorium expired May 31, and about 1000 evictions have been heard by the courts since then. Hearings are happening in person (putting people at risk of COVID) and by teleconference (violating due process). As always, most of the evictions are being filed in Black and brown neighborhoods, reinforcing decades of racial capitalism, designed to neglect, exploit, and oppress.

"Eviction is already a fundamentally traumatic event, both a cause and a condition of poverty, and the pandemic adds yet more anguish. Some people will move into motels, shelters, their cars, and double up in other housing units. Others will end up on the streets. All of these circumstances pose great risks to people, especially as COVID-19 cases continue to spike across the state. Let us be clear: evictions will be a death sentence for our most vulnerable neighbors.

"Join us to say HELL NO to evictions in Kansas City. Join us to stand in radical solidarity with leaders in our base and throughout the city who are facing eviction right now. You know the chant that goes "if we don't get it, shut it down" ? Join us to shut this violent process down.

"Wear a mask and keep a safe distance."

  1. 50% of renters on the streets. Almost a quarter million evictions in MO. Those are concerning numbers.
Hard times coming to a city near you. Does anyone elected have a plan or do we stumble through this next national crisis like we did COVID?

  2. I still don’t understand how you get evicted from section ape housing, they don’t have to pay shit and yet these morons get evicted. It’s impossible but yet these idiots manage to get legally evicted. You get what you deserve.

The free ride is over slackers! You had plenty of warning. You did nothing. I suggest that you move in with the mayor.

  4. There are houses for sale all over the city and monthly payments would be less than the rent they pay. But to own a home you have to accumulate a few bucks for a down payment and its easier to not pay rent and live somewhere for free.

Ask any landlord about collecting rent. I would guess that tenants voluntarily pay rent less than half the time. Most landlords have to harass tenants every month to collect.

  9. The writer is again amazed that evictions are filed in places where tenants have not been paying rent, which happens to be in mostly black neighborhoods. To show they are not racist, the landlords should also file for eviction of white and Asian tenants even though they are current on their rent. Oh, and throw a few of them in jail, so we can racially balance the arrest records.

Can't pay rent but getting an extra 600 a week unemployment. Oh wait I'm sorry, they had to have had a job to begin with to get that.

Many could have paid but they chose to use the shutdown as an excuse to not pay and therefor can't be kicked out of their casa.

One lady told me she can't pay July's rent but I noticed she had the money to go get a new car. Not a used car mind you a brand new Continental.

  11. Simple answer: Stop evictions as long as you forgive mortgages for people who own them.

Can't pay what you don't get. Simple math, except to Millenials and Democrats / Socialists.

  12. Anyone who was in favor of extending lockdowns and restrictions on businesses was also in favor of evictions. It is simple cause and effect. Unavoidable.

  13. I have a number of rental properties north and south of the river. I have collected almost all of my rent north of the river, but have collected very little since March south of the river. I bought these properties years ago when I was physically able to rehab them myself on weekends and after hours. I still maintain them now that I am older. I replaced the AC and toilet in one unit south of the river and the tenant hasn't paid rent since April. I know there are two families living there now, and they have cats against lease. I was attacked by fleas as soon as I entered. They broke the toilet, which is no surprise now that ten people are using the bathroom instead of four. Since the property is a duplex, I will likely have to have both units sprayed for fleas and roaches. I am lucky that I don't have mortgages on the properties, but I still have to pay taxes, insurance, and I provide water. If there is a mandated moratorium on rent, I will be OK with it if the city exempts landlords from paying taxes and utilities. I am not holding my breath.

  16. I have empathy for the renters about to be evicted, but at the end of the day they are asking to live in someone else's private property for free. Who is going to pay the apartment owner's mortgage?

  17. 109 called it. Uncle Sam is gonna have to help out the landlords too, or else the bankers end up owning it all. Just like the last bailout.

  19. Tip of big, big problem. Wait until 2nd more extensive lock down happens and million more go unemployed as the street battles over the Demoncrats getting soundly beat in the November elections and the children riot in an attempt to get their way. Long insane winter on its way !!!!

  21. It would make more sense if the rent protesters would approach commercial lenders who hold the mortgages on leased properties, and get them to work with their landlords to be able to reduce rents for a while without going into default.

But that, the protesters will never do. Marxists see only class conflict, proletarians versus bosses. Their aim is class based revolution, not problem fixing.

  22. Given the amount of stimulus these people got, not to mention the padded unemployment and any other government assistance, how can they be MONTHS behind in rent. One month, maybe. But 2-3 months??? I think they blew the other money in hopes that this anti-eviction bs would save their bacon.

  24. Want to know how to stop an eviction? There are a few ways actually. The first one is pay your rent on time. Second one is that if you don't have the full rent payment talk to the landlord and make a payment plan and stick to it. That builds trust which not paying at all does not. Third don't rent an apartment/house that you can not afford and make the payment on the place you can afford. Fourth, Don't not pay your rent even though you got and extra $600 from Uncle Sam and go out and cause destruction of property in the KC area. Yeah that last one isn't going to save your dead beat ass.
