Kansas City Might Not Have Cash To Finance 'Creative Class' Amid Coronavirus Cutbacks

A bold sentiment from local artsy organizations given recent disappointments:

KC performing arts will 'come back strong' after Kauffman Center cancellations

The Kansas City Symphony, Kansas City Ballet, Lyric Opera and the Harriman-Jewell series on Tuesday canceled all their productions for the rest of year because of COVID-19.

"We're going to come back strong," Paul Schofer, president and CEO of the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts, said, "and the absence in this case is going to make the excitement that much better when our doors do open again."

Maybe.

But millions of taxpayer cash for the Kauffman Center parking garage and other nearby amenities might be a tough sell in the future as the budget suffers more cuts, urban demands for funding become more strident and this town takes a historic hit to its revenue.

  1. But there's unlimited money to pour into the shithole at 18th % Vine, or the KU Alumni's Drunk Tank at the P&L District, or into some damned Kansas Real Estate Developer's pockets isn't there?

Imagine what this City could be if anyone at 12th & Oak actually gave the slightest shit about its Residents.
