One of the biggest local employers will keep its doors closed for the remainder of the year . . . More deets here for subscribers and a sign of the time for just about every local institution:

Cerner won't reopen its offices before 2021 - Kansas City Business Journal

Kansas City's biggest private employer won't reopen its area offices until next year. Cerner Corp. told employees Thursday that it will continue to have them work from home through the end of the year. The announcement comes as the spread of Covid-19 has picked up in the Kansas City area and nationwide, causing states and companies to reconsider reopening plans.

  1. If all those employees are working from home in Johnson County and Lee's Summit will they pay the E-tax? If not doesn't that leave a hole in the tax subsidy Cerner is getting?

  2. Cerner employees are about the most unhappy employees I know in Kansas City. I'm sure they're enjoying the break from the corporate straightjacket prevalent in their office locations.

  3. @4:34, yes. It's been tried before with no success. They are still employed "in KC" regardless of their cush lodgings in South JoCo.

  4. And all those fancy Buildings paid for by the taxpayers in Jackson, Clay and Wyandotte Counties?

  5. I for one like shopping for used stuff in South JoCo. Those people will throw out literally anything that might take a single $20 part to fix. I got a fridge, motorcycle and wife that way.

  6. @ 5:30 You are wrong. You don't have to pay the e-tax for any days you are not actually working in Kansas City.

  7. Payroll takes the tax out of your paycheck if you're in KCMO. I've been told if you want money back for days not working there, you have to fill out a special form the following year to get some money back. Not sure how cumbersome the form is. I'm sure many people don't bother but should.

  8. I wonder if Cerner regrets constructing the new headquarters building at the Grandview triangle that cost hundreds of $ millions as it appears everyone works just as well at home.

Brick and Mortar office buildings may be a thing of the past.

  9. @9:15, read the post @5:31 - Cerner didn't build anything, taxpayers did, in order to "bring in all those high-paying jobs"!

Three times Cerner has played exactly the same scam, with Clay County, MO. building them a huge Headquarters, then Wyandotte County Ks. "stealing all those jobs across the State Line" then, before the WYCO buildings were even finished, Jackson County, Mo. building the current campus to "bring those jobs here from Kansas and North of the River"!

The funniest this about this is that Cerner Management has been shopping the entire Corporation as a take-over to East and West Coast Conglomerates all the while.

As soon as they cut the price low enough, Cerner is gone, and nobody profits but the Executives! (a la Sprint)!

  10. Cerner will probably take the e-tax out of all the employees even if working from home. Those taxes will then go towards the TIF even if the city refunds a lot of them later. Maybe something the state auditor could investigate assuming she doesn't become governor.
