18th & Vine Plagued District By Vandalism

There has been a push for more security for this district, at taxpayer expense of course . . . In fact, there have been multiple instances of broken windows and damage to biz in and around the district . . . Meanwhile, this kind of property crime is spiking across the metro with less activity on local streets thanks to coronavirus. Read more:

Vandals target 18th and Vine Jazz District businesses

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The pieces inside the Ethnic Art Gallery are appealing to eye. What isn't appealing is the shattered glass welcoming patrons after vandals again damaged businesses in the 18th and Vine Jazz District. "When you get here, you don't know what to expect," Ron Chaney, director of the Ethnic Art Gallery told 41 Action News.

  1. Urban scholars just taking a well-deserved break from their studies for a game of catch with their fathers, right?

  2. Aw come on! I don't believe it. Fake news! This is the jewel of the city's Amish culture. Just another million or two and everything will be okey-dokey.

  3. Jazz is finished. It was a flash in the pan style of music. All the fat white men who play their brass intruments in their underwear at home are crying. But its true. All the Jazz "greats" are dying fast. Most were gay. Aids is killing them off. Its a sad fact. But true.

  4. Lets face it, the jazz style of music has passed. There are very few people who can stomach it. Its loud, disorganized. New Orleans is the Jazz city - not KC. Lets stop pretending Jazz started here. Close the district. Save money.

    1. Maybe that place is dead, but before the pandemic you could couldn't even get a table at many jazz clubs on a Friday or Saturday night.

  5. What "Pieces inside the Ethnic Art Gallery are appealing to eye?" Do they have any lawn jockeys on exhibit?

  6. Probably pissed off jazz musicians that don't get paid shit for playing there.

  7. It's really a shame when folks like Mr. Chaney and others open small businesses in the District and try to make a go of it and the usual suspects just can't bring themselves to behave like normal human beings, even when what they're destroying is owned by other black people.
And while this is going on, the city clowncil is approving another $7 million of taxpayer money to follow the over $100 million already thrown away in the area and encouraging the creation of an improvement district which will simply generate MORE tax money to disappear.
Meanwhile no one has the guts to even publicly identify and address the real problem.
    Sad.

  8. When vandals broke windows at the Plaza and Westport, it was a heartfelt cry for social justice. When they break a few windows at the Jazz District, it must be white nationalist racism. Lucas et al. must have lots of screws loose if they think anybody but their closest suckups are buying that BS.

  9. Defund 18th & Vine! The local white folk that were expected to flock to the area to experience the ‘rich culture’, aren’t coming. Either are the tourists. Plenty of other places to treated rudely or victimized. Move the two museums to a more appealing part of the city.

  10. Close it all down. KC is not the birthplace of Jazz. We have no Jazz claims. Jazz musicians of old, specifically told their families NOT TO BURY THEM IN KC. They left KC for good reason - new oleans is the jazz place.

  11. ^^and yet KC is the birthplace of Jazz. Weird.

  13. What the hell are you smoking, @1:13?
Ever hear of a City named New Orleans?

Hell, Joplin has a bigger Jazz Heritage than KC, you can make a pretty good argument that Ragtime originated in the Whorehouses there!

The only connection KC had to Jazz at all was that is was a railroad nexus, and Jazz Musicians heading to one of the centers of Jazz Music, New Orleans, Chicago, NYC or Los Angeles; could get off a train and pick up a few bucks here.

Every Jazz Musician with any KC connections had to leave town to make it big! We were a backwater, and nothing developed in KC, they were even playing BeBop in Chicago ten years before it got here.

  14. The City spent over $500k in security cameras at 18th & Vine. The should be able to identify the vandals.

  15. Jazz is not originally from KC. Jazz was a popular music once and all major cities then had Jazz clubs. Kc followed that pattern. Memphis, New Orleans, New York City and even San Franciso wee jazz hubs. But KC was not. Your grasping at threads thinking you can make this town known as a jazz town. Even Walt Disney bolted outta KC asap and yet we still claim its a disney hub? I have been to KC Jazz clubs. The people there are very odd, I dont feel safe as a man, wont even use the john's there. Those guys look and act LGBT. And thats not my thing. KC Jazz clubs are meat markets for sex pickups. Lots of whote men there that are afraid to admit they are gay, so they act like they are there for the music. They all are bald, look pregnant, are deaf from loud music and can't hold onto a perfect wife. Just come out of the closet dudes!

  16. Jazz is for the finger popping members of liberal cookie cutter design..

    "Playing ethnicky jazz
    To parade your snazz
    On your five grand stereo
    Braggin' that you know
    How the niggers feel cold
And the slum's got so much soul ".

It is all a repeat of History, nothing new to report from the Front.

  17. All music has a pattern except jazz. The world has fibonaci numbers, nature's ratios, order, planning. Jazz is a bunch of old men blasting their horns as loud as they can to draw attention to themselves. I am not impressed.
