SHAME!!! MASSIVE SPRINT LAYOFFS START IN KANSAS CITY DESPITE ASSURANCES!!!

As coronavirus continues to spark economic suffering across the globe and recent civil unrest created final devastation for both big & small biz, the demise of a local corporation is now underway.

To wit . . .

THE KANSAS CITY METRO IS FIRST TO SUFFER EPIC SPRINT LAYOFFS!!!

Reminder, the local newspaper helped politicos reassure the public that these inevitable job cuts wouldn't happen . . .

A little more than a year ago, Tracey Osborne Oltjen, president and CEO of the Overland Park Chamber of Commerce, declared via dead-tree media :

"The merger builds upon Sprint’s footprint in the region and promises positive impacts for economic growth, job creation and telecommunication leadership. As our region’s sixth-largest private sector employer, Sprint plays an integral role in supporting the community and its people . . ."

And today, many of those people will now be desperately looking for jobs in one of the worst economies in American history.

Check the links:

Verge: The T-Mobile and Sprint merger is already resulting in hundreds of layoffs

Tech Crunch: T-Mobile was eliminating Sprint’s inside sales unit (BISO), a sales division that focuses on small businesses across the United States.

Fox Biz: This widespread cuts enacted the WARN ACT, which requires companies to give employees advance notice of coming layoffs before the final day of employment which for some is in about two months.

There are about 6,000 people still working at Sprint headquarters in Overland Park. While local economic experts are slow to offer any predictions . . . Industry insiders point to similar instances wherein companies have laid-off employees over a relatively quick period of time following a merger/acquisition.

Developing . . .

  1. it was always going to happen this way.

Those 5,000 workers should all be looking for jobs.

If Overland Park and Kansas were really smart, they would be talking about creating a job placement program.

  5. All the Sprint employees who could find another job had done so before the merger was even announced.

The remaining "Future ex-Sprint employees" either couldn't find anything that didn't involve French Fries or are self-deluding Republicans who believe the rosy Economic Mythology of the past three years.

  6. It should be noted that this is emblematic of today's big corporation capitalism in many ways.

For example, concentration and potential monopoly power increases when four big competitors go to three.

Also, slash-and-burn cost-cutting is necessary to increase efficiency.

  7. Kansas City is better for having had Sprint and its predecessors.

    Thank you, Paul Henson.

  8. What becomes of Sprint Center?

  9. My Sprint service has worked flawlessly for years in and around Kansas City at a great price, far better than anything Verizon or AT&T could have given me. Anyone who thinks there won't be job cuts after one company acquires another one hasn't studied acquisitions of the past and is pretty naive. There are always natural redundacies and departments that are no longer carrying their weight in terms of return on investment.

  12. I used to work at Sprint and left the place. Employees/Longstreet used to skip work and go to see the Star Wars movie at AMC theatres down the street during work hours. Many "work from home" Sprint staff sleep till 11am and only work till 3pm. They only work 1/2 a day and get paid for a full day's work. They never even have to get out of their jammies. People shop at Town Center rather than sleep. They were all counting up their huge retirement in 1998 to 2000 when the company stock was skyhigh - like in the $70 range, then it fell to $3.00 and they are broke cause they overspent like they would get $70 in the future. Many contractors made 3 to 4 times what the average Sprint person made. So people quit and became contractors back to Sprint. One Sprint manager (who is female) spent at least 2 days a week trolling Town Center to tease and pickup men - then took them to her car and sex with them in the parking lot, and she was a married Prairie Village "Mom". Most hours were spent working on red tape that Sprint generated to justify jobs. The campus reminded me of a Jr College, not a workplace. The whole place was not a real revenue generating business that could sustain itself.

  13. The remaining Sprint employees may have been promised a severance package and bonus to stay with Sprint in KC until they shut the doors. Severance packages can be pretty lucrative at times.

Given today's economy after the COVID-19 shutdown; I would stay with Sprint until the very end to receive a nice salary and a severance package. It will be tough to find something that is equivalent in KC unless they go to Cerner.

    1. But both companies are sucking ass and we don't need advice from unemployed readers of a crap blog. Weird.

  14. No matter what they pay, Cerner is the most employee-unfriendly company in the area. The shine has been coming off that corporation for years, but it accelerated when Neil Patterson died. He was the only executive with any kind of vision of the future. Now they seem lost as the competition begins to eat their lunch with better products.

  15. Know a IT Contractor that scammed Sprint for so much he retired at age 48. They paid him outrageous amounts of money.

  16. Neal Patterson was the original entrepreneur of Cerner but I remember a front page article in the KC Star where Patterson was complaining he did see enough salaried Cerner employees working in the office on Saturdays and Sundays.

  20. Sprint has been a shithole forever. All the people left there are likely not super skilled and are not in demand, they are bloat.

Sprint is so fucking stupid they tried to sponsor everything (sprint cup, sprint center, sprint whatever the fuck). If they would have managed their money they might have remained a company but their service was an aids infested crack whores asshole with pimples on it.

    Good bye sprint

  23. Hey when does the ION project get completed at Sprint? You know the hyped project that got their stock price to spike up to record highs? ION was going to be like GOOGLE fiber in the 1990's. Only Sprint's competitor - ATT owned the lines going into people's homes and would not let its competitor Sprint "borrow" them. So Bill Esrey goes to Japan. ION - stupid 1 billion dollar flop. Far bigger $$$ flop than the Edsel or Corvair!

  24. AT&T is making major cuts now. Maybe it's because they and Verizon charge so much for cell service so they can cover all those pensions they have on the books.

    ReplyDelete
  25. It's obvious there are a lot of butt-hurt, layed-off ex-Sprint employees on here who haven't found a decent job afterward.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I know "work from home" Sprint people right now. They work maybe 5 hours a week, when they are paid for 40. sprint needs the layoffs

    ReplyDelete
  27. ^^ That sums up about everyone I know working from home no matter what company they're working for.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Sprint hires the lazy people that would never want to work at Cerner, H&R Block, Shamrock, DST, or Garmin. If your lazy, dont want anyone looking over your shoulder ever, want to work from home and never see any other Sprint staff then its a great place. But it means your anti-social and unskilled. Manker's disaster is what I call the campus. Is it a Jr College or minimum security prison plan they copied? Natural prairie grasses? Did that grass help revenue?

    ReplyDelete
  29. Cerner's employee turnover rate must be horrendous. The only people who stay their long are good at politics and kissing butt.
