Newsflash: Even Progressive Authors Now Hate The Kansas City Star

A losing proposition . . . The Star now confronts criticism from the left and a local literary figure who has enjoyed a ton of free press . . .

Celebrated by social media friends, author Whitney Terrell writes . . .

"Why did the Kansas City Star publish this irresponsible article? Jay Nichols makes a number of assertions about J.C. Nichols that are demonstrably false. No fact checking. No voice on the other side of the issue. So here are some facts."

The screed is mostly nitpicking about J.C. Nichols history but a sign that locals of every political stripe are giving up on the newspaper.

You decide . . .

  1. so the systemic racism in housing covenants was primarily when everyone was freaking about the great migration and also competing with influx of foreign immigrants.

  2. is whitney arguing the point or simply saying it's sloppy journalism?

  3. I'm thrilled to see someone calling the Jay Nichols version of what his grandfather did for KC exactly what it was - gashlighting. How long must everyone, every race and color, be told that what is visible right in front of them isn't true? The old money in this country doesn't want you to see they've pitted us all against each other, and it's worked for hundreds of years. Old money doesn't care about you or your city. Old money cares about making more money. Wake up, sheeple!

  4. Anyone suddenly complaining about the sloppy "reporting" and endless narratives of the Star really hasn't been paying attention for quite a long time.
Almost all the serious actual journalists are long gone and the bright shiny new J-school kiddie corps is on the job.
Facts, details, and certainly any understanding of the metro are not among this crowd's strengths.
And, like the TV "reporters", just interview someone and print anything they say.
Not the place to go to get real information before forming opinions or making decisions.

  5. would be helpful to analysis, particularly prior 1915 when trend started, to cross reference historical records of labor market/labor competition, census records, and crime rates.

  7. "assertions...that are demonstrably false...no fact checking"

    So, like Tony's Kansas City.

^^^^ Blog is a blog. Pretty sure TKC would take that as a compliment. Bitch.

  9. .... finance/banking policies, some of which were predatorial in the region. JC Nichols was not a banker but undoubtedly had to work with them.

After the "N-word" and "N-letters" were banned by racial protestors, Whitney reluctantly became known as Whitey!!!

Finally. A joke that's funnier than anything contained in Whitney's work.

  13. Gone are the days where reporters were paid a decent living wage. Now, it's a job for a newbie J-school graduate who still lives with mommy and daddy. That's the only kind of reporter the Star and other newspapers can afford, and it shows by the lack of depth and balance in the articles. Because they're so young and naive, they're still drinking the liberal Kool-Aid and don't realize the Dems would love to tax their puny paychecks even more to pay for expanded socialist programs to illegal aliens and others who don't want to work. It's OK, though, since mommy and daddy put a roof over their heads, and they still can afford a mocha double-espresso cappuccino every Wednesday if they can find a coupon.

  14. Well the Star covered the demonstrations and riots and looting too. So should they retract all of the rush to cave into the demands of a few thousand people that cant hardly spell? The demonstrations we have endured for going on three weeks, because we have to have a daily demonstration, are worthless and in a year will not mean anything.

  15. I read through Whitney's post and didn't see any facts that rebut what Nichols wrote. There was suburban sprawl going all directions from the urban core in the early 1900's - South, East, West, North. If you look at the sprawl in every direction, the segregation continues to be evident. This phenomenon was not limited to Kansas City either. Look at every major metro area's suburban sprawl of the early 1900's and minorities were not a part of the move. He needs more FACTS to single out JC Nichols as the architect of this movement.

Why does it continue today? Why is Mission Hills almost exclusively white? Well, it's not because of covenants or deed restrictions that haven't been invoked for over 70 years. It's because of economics.
