Newsflash: Coronavirus Busts Kansas City Budget Like Everybody Else

Newspaper link tease tells us what we should already know . . . Kansas City suffers HISTORIC economic hardship amid the ongoing pandemic:

COVID-19's possible toll on Kansas City budget: Fewer cops, firefighters, road repairs

The economic fallout caused by the coronavirus pandemic could force Kansas City to cut essential services, eliminate or delay maintenance projects and sell off park land to offset falling revenues. Stay-at-home orders issued earlier this year to limit the spread of COVID-19 shuttered nonessential businesses for weeks, leading to a slump in some tax revenues.

  1. Great time not to have to pay that $15 million lug for the P&L District , the $4 Million for Burke's hotel, and how knows how much more for all the other more obscure "development" schemes.
Tens of millions of tax dollars that could be used to provide actual services to residents.
What happened to the all-time largest "rainy day fund" that gopher boy Hernandez was spouting off about on TV?
    What a sad operation.

  2. City has lots of money for street repairs. New asphalt on Gillham Plaza ! I’m sorry I was wrong that new asphalt was for the New Bike Lanes that we so desperately needed.

  3. This is not to say that the KC government will reduce spending on any of its pet projects (corporate welfare or social-justice programs that play well in the press). They're going to slash street maintenance, police budget, trash pickup, and a wide variety of day-to-day services.

But . . . they will also raise taxes in the near future. Nashville just raised property taxes 34%, and they were in MUCH better shape financially (pre-pandemic) than KC. There is going to be a property tax increase - both on the Missouri and Kansas sides - that will make last year's Jackson County increase look like chump change. You can also expect a tax increase on wages that will be applied to non-city residents.

    That's just for starters.

  4. The economic fallout was NOT caused by the virus it was caused by poor leadership and theft within the leadership. Wasted money on racist projects like the Paseo name change the failing Jazz district, shoveling money to developers for freebies, and the RIOTS that kept everyone from opening their doors. The economic fallout was happening way before the virus.

  5. The virus doesn't do anything except making people sick. It is the city political leadership that crushed KC's economy with its insane overreaction to a virus that barely ever took hold locally. The budget crisis was predicted by the more sentient denizens of this blog while the lockdown was ungoing. Their concerns were rudely dismissed by the sycophants then as they are now.

  6. Put your vote to work instead of your keyboard skills! Vote these incompetent politicians OUT! We only have ourselves to blame when we vote by identity politics instead of substance. Wake up KC!

  7. Huge waste of City funds as reparations for the owners of 18th and Vine continue... You can call is anything you want but it is nothing but a handout to these owners of 18th and Vine. Absolutely zero chance of any economic development success here. You would be better just giving these folks a welfare check.
These owners only profit comes from screaming at City Council members who cave in and give these folks city money. At the same time roads who are used by thousand of residents of KCMO crumble.

  8. Reparations should only come from Federal sources and not from City funding. Why should a law abiding City residents taxes be used to bail out the 18th and Vine owners??? This is nothing but a shell game. Economic Development??? The chances if 18th and Vine success is Zero and to call these bailouts anything but reparations is ignorant.

  9. Slash city funding for The Street Car, 18th and Vine, Linwood Grocery and take this funds and fix the streets and police dept.

  10. ...................Reparations should come from NOWHERE...................
