Kansas City Star Denounces J.C. Nichols Racism Amid Backs Plaza Parkway Rename

The newspaper was late to this story and now they're struggling to stay relevant with an editorial screed that simply mimics most of the progressive social media chatter we've heard over the past 48-hours without revealing that the MLK switcheroo is already starting to crumble via a dearth of support from the African-American community.

But never mind what residents might think.

Here's the newspaper pushing an agenda based on social media chatter:

J.C. Nichols was a racist. Kansas City shouldn't honor him with a fountain or a parkway

Renaming the J.C. Nichols Memorial fountain near the Country Club Plaza and the J.C. Nichols Parkway nearby would be an extraordinarily powerful symbol of inclusion for a city that still struggles with racial division. The city should move quickly to make these needed changes.

  1. George Floyd was a life long criminal
, KC should not honor him with events and murals.

  3. Believe it or not, kiddos, bad people can do great things -- like build a city!

  4. The Plaza has already been badly damaged and was on the way down long before George Floyd, largely due to the violence, theft and damaging behavior by Kansas City "youth".

Might as well finish it off with a rename.

OR! the area can be reclaimed by responsible individuals that love the area, demand safety, responsibility and civil order.

Put the Plaza name change to another vote, please.

The latest "concept" will ALSO, straight up, also go down in flames, much like the Paseo rename attempt.

  5. Why is the Pink Star still giving their opinions ? They are one big reason this city has become a liberal sh_t hole.

    ReplyDelete
  6. This is just more virtue signaling from the sjw’s, they need to shut up already, this won’t do anything to help anybody, all this name change will do is destroy the plaza and the city. JC Nichols did what everybody else did at the time. He was no racist, blaming a guy that did so much good for the entire city after he's been dead for such a long time is not fixing the current problem. Is that how we do things now? Instead of coming up with a new idea because it’s hard so the easiest thing to do is accuse someone that’s dead of being a racist and remove their history and put in mlk’s name because it’s easier. C’mon kc, you can do better than this.

Changing a streets name is not the answer to racism, it does nothing for anybody. That’s already been proven. Mlk streets are the most dangerous streets in the world.

    ReplyDelete
  7. JC was a man of his times, it it ridiculous to judge men of the past by today's standards.

Besides what's so bad about being a racist, any thinking person is and it just might save your life someday.

  8. Kind of ironic that all those liberals living in Brookside are there because of J.C. Nichols deed restrictions. Without them blacks would have most likely moved into Brookside years ago and all the liberals would have moved out.

Not defending deed restrictions just pointing out the likely results. It's easy to live in a lily white neighborhood and call others racist.

    ReplyDelete
  9. ^^^ good point, they moved there to put their kids in the best private schools and to get away from the blacks so yes, it is ironic. It’s kinda like they’re making sure that blacks stay as far away from them as possible while blaming everybody else for being racist. Typical despicable dimwits.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Black crime caused the white flight. Not J.C. Nichols.

    ReplyDelete
  11. The blacks could have built their own neighborhoods and used deed restrictions to keep white people out.

    ReplyDelete
  12. The KC Star did the advertising for all the real estate and at the time they had a real section in the newspaper. Shut the KC Star down NOW.

  13. "JC was a man of his times, it it ridiculous to judge men of the past by today's standards."

    Good point.

"Besides what's so bad about being a racist, any thinking person is and it just might save your life someday."

But you're an idiot. I guess even idiots can have a good point once in a while. Weird.

  14. KC Star editorial board = All-White membership + 1 Black male

McClatchy newspaper company was founded by racists.

KC Star editorial board members are hypocrites who primarily reside in white JoCo KS neighborhoods.

Editorial board has been content with the name of the fountain and parkway for decades. Only AFTER a name change became trendy with vocal activist whiners did they bring it up for discussion. Pathetic reactionaries!

  15. Beings how Nichols was from 1800's Olathe he'd probably didn't see a black person until his college year. Just my guess though.

Checking black population numbers for MO during Nichols' development years I see on a thirty year average anywhere from 5.0 to 7.5 black people/african american per 100 people. Not very many colored folks.

Why not get rich with what's available at the time - if whites have the money to give to me {Nichols} to make their lives better, why not?

Something else - changing names on street signs and fountains won't make my life any better or worse. It will drive the city coffers a little drier though.

  16. positive change is needed, but a Maoist Cultural Revolution is not.

history was then, this is now.

let's fix the police and all try to fo better with our black neighbors.

but a Maoist Cultural Revolution is the most fascist thing there is.

  17. JC Nichols is dead and has been for years. These people milk things to death. Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson are racists too but that doesn't matter does it. Why don't you black people leave? You have done nothing but destroy and pollute. You will not get any sympathy from me.

  21. William Rockhill Nelson was also an early developer in the vein of JC Nichols . . . not to mention a big supporter of Woodrow Wilson and Teddy Roosevelt (both of whom supported not just segregation, but gave whole-hearted endorsements to eugenics)

So . . . maybe the Star - Nelson's creation - should be closed down. Maybe that famed art museum should be renamed for a black historical figure . . . after all the painting are of course divided up among the looters.

  22. Put a fork in the Plaza it's toast.

Put a fork in Kansas City as well.

No one will ever trust Mayor Lucas or the politicians in Kansas City ever again to invest their hard-earned cash in this city.

Those who are already invested in KC will try to advertise everything is great to protect their investment, but no new money will come in.

Loewe's hotel has bad timing on its grand opening.

  23. It is ok to be racist now apparently...as long as your racism is aimed at white men. Ageism is also ok as it acceptable to hate on older people who have been around the track a few times and might know a thing or two.

But the medieval tradition of digging up a dead pope and putting him on trial for his crimes seems to have been revived by the woke mob. This won’t end well...for anybody.

  35. bLIEron, I’ll give you two good reasons, the fat fake revs and the cleave don’t want it there plus if the black people decide that after 43 years of no votes from the black community, they would want it in a black neighborhood, not in a rich white neighborhood. Now fuck off dipshit.

  44. Where did you get your crime stats? KKK.com?

Nichols was a urban development genius. Was he personally a racist? Like many brilliant businessmen, he may well have been totally "color blind" -- unable to really see any color but GREEN. If it makes you more money to discriminate against blacks and Jews...If that racism is a profitable sales point? Hey, why not? A buck is a buck, right. I suspect that if he could have made more money reserving every third lot for a black or Jewish family, that would have been in the deeds. Greed is good, right?

On the other hand, let us not be naive: KC's Jackson, Clay and Platte County suburbs filled up on the -- not always unspoken -- sales pitch of avoiding those "urban" folk. As did Johnson County. Historically, White Flight was the CAUSE of urban school district problems well before it becade the result.

Besides, The Plaza no longer has any Nichols family ownership connection. Perhaps the time has come to move on, namewise.

    ReplyDelete
  45. "Give us a good argument for not changing the name." If the name is changed from J.C. Nichols Blvd.due to his past bad acts, then we will never be able to name a street after Martin Luther King Jr. due to his bad acts (serial adultery and plagiarism, if you're curious). Better to name streets and buildings after historical figures' good acts and cut them some slack for their bad ones.

"Historically, White Flight was the CAUSE of urban school district problems well before it became the result." Was that because following white flight, the formerly mostly white schools were filled with mostly undisciplined and violence prone black students? Busing created white flight, which ruined the KCMO public schools.

    ReplyDelete
  46. @2:53 - Thanks for the laugh. Much needed.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Historically, forced busing and block busting led to white flight. Families would move into neighborhoods because they wanted their children to go to those schools but were then told they would be bused elsewhere and other kids would be bused in from other parts of town. It made more sense to leave KC completely so their children could attend suburban districts that did not have the problems that some city schools did.

Forced busing came first and then there was white flight.

    ReplyDelete
  48. All blacks are racist. If not, they're uncle Toms. Either way, being black seems to be a crappy way to go through life and doesn't need to be celebrated.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Sigh. Instead of using the $$$ to rename streets, remove all offensive statues, etc... use it to fund something that will actually make a difference.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Anyone know the connection between newspaper founder William R. Nelson and J.C. Nichols in KC real estate development? Weren't they both into real estate for the well-to-do and exclusion of certain races in their neighborhoods around South KC? If Nelson and Nichols both engaged in red-lining, then it seems appropriate for the star to call out its founder and denounce Nelson as racist and demand the paper be renamed and the Nelson-Atkins Art Gallery be demolished as it is founded on the principle of segregation and racism. Just wondering... JB
