SHOW-ME GOP SMACK DOWN AGAINST 'BDS' MOVEMENT IN MISSOURI!!!
Amid a bevy of coronavirus legislation, Missouri lawmakers took a moment to offer a stern rebuke to a controversial movement that claims to be part of "social justice" advocacy.
For those who don't know . . .
BDS - Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions is a Palestinian-led campaign promoting various forms of boycott against Israel. The campaign claims that its objective is to pressure Israel until it meets what the campaign describes as Israel's obligations under international law, defined as withdrawal from the occupied territories, removal of the separation barrier in the West Bank, full equality for Arab-Palestinian citizens of Israel, and "respecting, protecting, and promoting the rights of Palestinian refugees to return to their homes and properties"
The reason this is a concern in Missouri is that the movement has taken hold on college campuses and many students are pressuring universities to participate in BDS.
Many claim that BDS is an Antisemitic effort . . . Here's a passage that explains opposition as succinctly as possible. . .
BDS is Antisemitic
"BDS claims that it advocates for only non-violent steps, most importantly the “return” of millions of descendants of Palestinian refugees into Israel proper. But let’s not be confused. First, the end result of such a policy would be the same–the dissolution of the world’s only Jewish state. And second, anyone with even a rudimentary understanding of the Middle East knows that if the BDS movement’s dream ever came true, it would quickly turn into a nightmare for the Jewish population. In a majority Palestinian state–which given current societal trends would most likely be under an Islamist leadership such as Hamas–the fate of the Jews would be anything but peaceful. This is a region where minorities are either massacred, oppressed or driven out. Those who therefore claim that Jews could live in security and dignity in a majority Palestinian state are just hiding their cynical intentions behind fanciful language of so-called justice."
From a strategic standpoint, it's also important to note that Israel is the only real U.S. ally in the region.
And all of this leads us a Republican effort that will put the kibosh on this college pastime protest . . .
KMBC: Missouri lawmakers pass bill against boycotting Israel
"Missouri lawmakers on Thursday passed a bill to ban the state from doing business with companies that boycott Israel. The GOP-led House approved the measure 95-40 on Thursday, the day before their Friday deadline to pass bills this year."
