Progressive Kansas City Blogger Forgets Most Important Part MLK Riot Quote

A recent missive from MO Rage attempts to offer a perspective on recent rioting with one of his many quote posts . . .

"I contend that the cry of 'black power' is, at bottom, a reaction to the reluctance of white power to make the kind of changes necessary to make justice a reality for the Negro. I think that we've got to see that a riot is the language of the unheard."

--Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

"Still sadly true--and relevant--today."

Only pointing this out because we've seen this mistake quite a bit via social media . . .

THE SECOND PART OF THIS MLK QUOTE & SENTIMENT IS ALWAYS OMITTED BECAUSE IT WARNS AGAINST RIOTING!!!

Here it is . . .

Reverend King tried to explain the cause of rioting to a mostly white audience at Stanford University in 1967 during his "The Other America" speech.

"Let me say as I've always said, and I will always continue to say, that riots are socially destructive and self-defeating," King said.

Minneapolis Police Were Sued a Decade Ago in Similar Restraint Case.

"Minneapolis paid out $3 million dollars to settle a lawsuit over the 2010 death of David Smith, 28. The young black man was mentally ill, his attorneys said, and died after officers Tasered him and then held him face-down on the floor for several minutes. One of them kept a knee on his back even after he stopped responding to questions."

  9. MLK went on to say:

"Certain conditions continue to exist in our society, which must be condemned as vigorously as we condemn riots. But in the final analysis, a riot is the language of the unheard. And what is it that America has failed to hear? It has failed to hear that the plight of the Negro poor has worsened over the last few years. It has failed to hear that the promises of freedom and justice have not been met. And it has failed to hear that large segments of white society are more concerned about tranquility and the status quo than about justice, equality and humanity. And so in a real sense our nation’s summers of riots are caused by our nation’s winters of delay. And as long as America postpones justice, we stand in the position of having these recurrences of violence and riots over and over again. Social justice and progress are the absolute guarantors of riot prevention"
