Low Turnout Stays Winning Upcoming KCFD Sales Tax Increase June 2nd Election

Public radio picks up a point that we've been making on this blog for weeks . . . Here's their whispered words on the sketchy process:

A Sales Tax Hike For Firefighters Is Likely To Be Decided By A Tiny Fraction Of Kansas City Voters

Kansas City voters will decide on June 2 whether to raise taxes for the fire department. But with the COVID-19 pandemic overshadowing all other civic matters, it may be a very low turnout election for a crucial issue affecting the city's fire protection and tax burden over the next 15 years.

  1. I'm voting NO on this bitch, and I will be there to vote.

  2. I’ll vote no as well, but these asshats changed my polling place and it appears that there’s only one place for my entire area to vote at now, they just doubled or tripled the amount of voters at one place, it’s almost like they don’t want people to vote.

  3. Good for you guys it's about time everyone stopped voting to raise sales and property tax until this city shows some responsibility to the citizens who pay taxes. Things like sewer lines, street repair, decent sidewalks, and stop building on top of neighborhoods to get kick backs and free apartments from the developers.

And yes that is exactly what they want....people not to vote out of fear. Think about it.. putting more people together when they are preaching social distancing. Don't fall for this crap!

    VOTE NO

  4. If this sales tax passes and I'm sure it will. Stop buying in Kansas City don't support this, don't eat at restaurants in the city, you can buy anything in the suburbs that KC has. You won't be missing anything. The city is robbing the firefighters and the taxpayers! Don't support this. Their voting changes are BS too. More people and less voting places. Come On wise up!

  7. Just look at a sales receipt from the '80s or '90s and see how much the sales tax percentage has gone up since then. It's time to stop this madness that is destroying the financial health of so many families. Sales taxes have gone up enough! The government is one big leech sucking us dry through taxes.

  8. Voting locations have all been changed. Covid 19 is still active. This all impairs voter turnout for this special election. Congratulations to Quinton Lucas and his cagey tactics to pass this sales tax. This was a really slick and shady one, Lucas. An election by invitation only. What a crafty set up ! Says a lot about the character of this inexperienced public official. And the KC Council. Their egos are unchecked.

  10. Vote no. This city gives and redirects money to the tune of 10s of millions of dollars annually to private developers and corporations. That is a FACT. In other words, our trusted city leaders, for decades, have bent over backwards to help make things financially easier for millionaire and billionaire developers and corporations to build and do business here. But when it comes to taking care of citizens with things like police and fire protection, basic services, schools and infrastructure, they want to always raise taxes on normal people. In other words, this city goes to extreme measures to make things financially easier for people who don't need it but makes things financially more difficult on the people who already struggle to make ends meet financially.

Imagine what this city could do if all the 10s of millions of dollars that have been spent and diverted to frivolous shit was instead directed towards police and fire, schools, infrastructure, etc? It's the very epitome of fiscal irresponsibility and no matter who sits in the mayor's office or council, the song never changes. Now they want to raise taxes AGAIN for something that should already be covered with the taxes we already pay. It's ridiculous. But hey....

  11. The pro-tax forces are well organized and funded. There is no organization - funding equivalent on the anti-tax side. The vote is scheduled on a date when no other major issues are on most ballots, so those who will benefit from the tax are more motivated to go to the polls.

It's the same game that the City and County have been playing for years, because it works like a charm. They are terrible at governing, but great at shaking down the public.

  12. I'm voting yes. This passes easy. See you guys at the victory party.
