Kansas City Police Chief Rick Smith defended his officers' response to protesters Saturday at the Country Club Plaza.Police fired tear gas, used pepper spray and flash bangs after some in the crowd began throwing rocks and bottles at officers, damaged businesses and set fire to at a police vehicle.Smith said every single officer who was on the line at the Plaza had been assaulted.Two officers were hospitalized after being hit: one with an injury to the temple and one with a lacerated liver."Before we use a chemical at any time, we give a warning and we tell people.
