KC TENANTS PROTEST AT COURTHOUSE: END EVICTIONS OR PEOPLE DIE!!!

These activists seemed committed to their cause and dropped to the ground to show their commitment in the rain this morning.

Check their words and video:

KC Tenants protest call to action . . .

"Despite driving hundreds of calls and emails into the offices of Presiding Judge David M. Byrn, calling on him to stop evictions during this pandemic, his office has not responded.

"In-person eviction hearings began last Thursday. Right now, hundreds more tenants face eviction. The Jackson County eviction moratorium is set to end on May 31, and tenants can be physically removed from their homes as soon as June 1. Rent will be due again on June 1, and thousands across the metro area will not be able to pay.

"Today, during the landlord-tenant docket, we call on Judge Byrn to extend the eviction moratorium before it expires."

  2. The judge can do what he wants but the appellate court can issue a writ of mandamus to order him to enter a judgment if appropriate.

If society feels that tenants shouldn't have to pay then society should pay the landlords.

  3. Quinton Lucas promised the world but delivered a situation to the detriment of both the tenants and the landlords. Not a new concept, failure to pay rent results in eviction. Odd the tenant advocates pursue venues with little if any options to address the evictions situations. Follow the money... the feds, the state and the county have the money. Quinton Lucas and KCMO will be in line with the tenants for the handouts.

  4. Ok so what are they doing with all their stimulus money and unemployment.

  5. They would be more credible if they'd distinguish between pandemic connected hardship and deadbeats.

The obligation to pay rent does not go away during an eviction moratorium. It just builds up, possibly to the extent that the amount due will motivate the landlord to go after a civil judgment and not just eviction.

  8. Most people are getting an extra 600 bucks a week from unemployment. No one wants to go back to work its a paycut. How about use some of that extra money to pay your rent.

  9. Most people don't qualify for the $600/week unemployment. Most of the people who are at risk of becoming unhoused are too low income to receive that much. People who are qualifying, and had applied in March when their places of employment went out of business won't be receiving any money using this system as late as August, most in July.

The $1200 stimulus doesn't carry through this entire event for a single person, let alone a family of 4; for rent, food, electricity, internet so kids can continue education.

Renters not paying landlords isn't a spiteful act. For many it's not a choice. Going after these people is ridiculous. Of course the government should be doing something to help the landlords, so that the landlords don't have to go after the tenants. That is the whole point of protesting Governor Parson. When he doesn't listen. Then move towards the people who can put a wrench in the gears of this process.

MO was declared a state of emergency. Shortly followed by receiving 10's of millions of dollars. You can google this. Parson then went on to say he was going to use this money over the course of the next 10 years to build a stronger state government. And that there isn't currently a problem This is self preservation. That isn't what the money was intended for. And no one is reporting on this.
