KANSAS CITY COVID-19 RENT STRIKE STAYS WINNING HELP FROM CITY HALL!!!

Today's blast from a tenants group inspired the only worthwhile reporting in this town today . . .

"It's happening. Today was the first day Jackson County courts were open for in-person eviction hearings.

"Let us repeat. Jackson County evicted families today, and held potentially life-threatening in-person hearings to do it.

"People can't be physically evicted from their homes till June 1, but judges are already hearing and deciding eviction cases which will be executed in just a handful of days. This is horrific. The state is "open for business," but people aren't back to work. Debts have accrued, people are still facing unexpected expenses like childcare and medicines.

"We must extend the eviction moratorium to STOP these proceedings immediately. It is a matter of life and death. We can win this extension, but we need all of you to show up and take action now."

And so City Hall snapped into action . . .

Kansas City will likely fund a third attorney to provide legal assistance to low-income tenants facing eviction, City Council members decided Thursday after deadlocking over the issue in committee a day earlier. The $65,000 contract for the Heartland Center for Jobs and Freedom received no recommendation from committee and so the full council voted sent it to the council’s June 4 docket where it will pass in all likelihood.

  1. free stuff for everybody all the time. THIS is why I'm voting democrat.

It's just the right way to do things if the corporations are going to be getting the same kind of tax breaks from the Republicans.

^^^^ 8:35 asks the right question.

This is a dumb idea to help people who need some other kind of housing options. This is really just a tax on anyone who has property to rent and the Mayor showing that he doesn't know anything about business. Really ashamed I voted for the guy.

  5. Most likely the evictions at the head of the line had nothing to do with corona virus layoffs. Just the usual deadbeats milking the system to live on someone else's dime.

Mayor Lucas has no power to change state law. No rent, no tenancy.

  7. Can't Tara put up the unfortunate in her wealthy parents mission hill's home? Or at least pop up tents in the yard temporarily?

  8. Now the tenants have a lawyer to explain the signed lease and the money owed? The tenants still owe rent and will be evicted with or without a layer. The issue is the tenants stopped paying rent.
