Kansas City Citizen Journalist Fights Alleged Police Crackdown Conviction After Documenting Controversial Arrest

Testimony from this street reporter:

The county prosecutor said in a statement that she was, “grateful that a citizen captured this incident on video.” But a municipal court judge found him guilty of, “failure to obey a lawful order.”

“I ain’t interfering. I’m just recording,” Roderick Reed can be heard saying in the video.

“So am I. Now move along,” replied one of the officers.

A video provided by police shows the officers ordering Reed to move his car.

An officer can be heard yelling, “You’re blocking traffic!”

Police said they issued the citation because he was stopped in a lane of traffic, not because he was shooting the video. Though he pulled over 1-1/2 minutes after being ordered to do so.

“I became a villain from it. And now I’m being punished according to the law for doing the right thing,” Reed said.

Man who recorded assault video of KCPD appealing conviction

KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) - It's been nearly a year since Roderick Reed stopped as he drove by Brush Creek and Virginia to shoot video of an arrest that took him aback. "Like I was in disbelief," Reed said. On Friday, a grand jury indicted the two officers with fourth-degree assault of Breona Reed, a misdemeanor.

  4. These cops had to step up when President trump failed to keep his promise to end crime in our cities on day 1 of his administration. At least they're trying, Trump's done NOTHING!

  5. ^^^^ @ 8:16

President Trump NEVER promised to end crime i nour cities as a matter of fact he has no jurisdiction or power to interfere with our cities IDIOT! That is the job of the mayors your people voted in. So go to your mayor and leave Trump out of it. He has NOTHING to do with crime in our city. I can't believe how STUPID your people are.

@8:06 Most republicans don't watch FOX it is a liberal station owned by democrats. STUPID

  6. "Citizen journalists" are nothing more than people with agendas who troll around looking for "incidents" and then record, edit, and post to try to advance their narrative.
Rarely do you see what happened BEFORE hat's recorded, mostly because the BEHAVIOR of the "victim" more than warranted the response.
And the entire Michael Brown fraud is Exhibit A.

  7. @8:22AM-and yet Trump absolutely promised to end the carnage on day 1 of his administration during his inauguration address. You can look that up. If he has no jurisdiction to do it, why would he say it then? Do you think he's just dumb or a liar? Both? Weird.

  8. ^^^The carnage he was referring to was decline of American cities, not street crime. Three years of economic growth followed. Cities are not perfect but they're better. He will finish the job in his next term.

BTW, how's Obama doing with his promise to slow the rise of the oceans?

  9. With their low IQ the only way to get a response from the local hood rat is through pain. Well done officers.

  10. @9:36AM and yet it was absolutely NOT the decline of the American Cities he was referring to you CHUD. You obviously failed to read the speech, which is not unusual coming from CHUDS, as they averse to facts. You seem to have a computer, you know CHUD, you can look up the actual speech and read it for yourself? Ask your gay son who hates you how to do that. Obama kept his promise, Trumpster the Dumpster revoked & rolled back his actions as Biden will do to the morbidly Obese moron in January of 21. Weird.

  11. Oh Goddamn! 9:36AM just got his geezer skull caved in by 9:54AM. Absolutely brutal takedown of a Trumptard. Brutal!! Nice work...the nation salutes you good sir, you're doing God's work!

  16. It is sadly true that these officers will likely themselves be victims of a Law Enforcement structure that sees patience and courtesy as weakness and sees proper training and discipline as optional.

When these cops arrived responding to an ARGUMENT, nothing illegal was going on. All they had to do was WALK AWAY. Instead, poor training in the simple courtesy of leaving citizens alone generated an arrest -- for what seems to be a stretch -- and an ensuing struggle. In which the overuse of force is hard to deny.

BECAUSE OF THE VIDEO! No longer would it just be a Lying Contest like the police always win. They knew they were ONLY potentially in trouble because of the bystander video -- so, having arrested one person unnecessarily and brutally, they decided to intimidate the witness by filing charges against him for stopping to film their misconduct! AND A CITY JUDGE FOUND HIM GUILTY!

Here is where the institutional lack of discipline comes back to hurt the officers: The victim of their assault had died. But for their insistence on intimidating and punishing the witness, it is unlikely anyone would have much cared about the incident. If there had been any actual disciplinary action -- a short suspension, a reprimand, any indication that torturing an unarmed citizen by trying to dislocate both shoulders was unacceptable -- this would have died a quiet death.

Instead -- thanks to Chief Smith and his apparent decision to make criminal charges the only option for the public to impose any discipline on KCPD officers -- two apparently otherwise-decent cops having a really bad day may loose their careers.

If you really care about the police, you have to care about proper training and discipline. If you really care about the Rule of Law, you have to care about watching the watchers!

  19. Breonna Reed any relationship to Jermaine Reed (clown, politician, habitual liar, former 3rd district rep)? Seems suspicious that both have these tendencies... nevertheless, police brutality and abuse of authority should be prosecuted.
