Jackson County Prosecutor Supports Criminal Investigations Over Online Threats To Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer

The rhetoric of recent coronavirus regulation protests is reaching a tipping point in some parts of the nation.

Example:

Detroit Free Press: Gov. Gretchen Whitmer reacts to threats against her, others with another protest looming

Perspective from progressives:

CNN: There's a rebellion brewing and Trump is egging it on

Accordingly, one of the top law enforcement officials in the Kansas City metro and leader of the Democratic Party in Missouri recently offered her perspective regarding online hateration.

Jackson County Prosecutor @jeanpetersbaker Tweeted:

"Some ideologies stir strong emotions and some folks speak out in moments of anger. That causes many to flee from politics, but ... this speech is not okay ... this is not normal ... this is dangerous ... We should expect this speech will cause criminal investigations!"

In the context of this discussion, this isn't really a controversial comment and there aren't any mainstream Republicans who will endorse threats of violence against an elected official. The prosecutor is correct that some of the comments aren't "protected speech" and cross the line.

Recent polling suggests that a majority of Americans disapprove of coronavirus protesters.

Nevertheless . . .

Part of the frustration during the pandemic lockdown stems from historic regulation of 1st Amendment freedoms like restrictions of large gatherings in the name of public health and based on rapidly evolving science and data. In the future, this debate is likely to worsen as crackdowns on the discourse become even more intense and easier to enact given increasingly limited and strictly controlled outlets for political expression.

    1. Always surprised to see some of the really insane stuff that people sign their name to. From blog posts to bad legislation. Threatening online comments are just one bad idea out of many.

  4. She is absolutely wrong. Being broke ass has no future. A lot of businesses could return at this point and many unemployed broke ass people could have a job again. Think about that ? Weird

  6. She’s an idiot and she has hurt her constituents badly, she deserves the criticism and besides, it comes with the territory. I’m sick of her poor decisions and then turning the dimwit playbook of crying foul against everybody else into a pity party, she sucks at her job because she can’t handle it and now she wants to play poor pitiful me, everybody’s out to get me crap. I’d start a recall petition and see what she has to say about that.

She’s getting a small taste of what trump and the republicans have been getting undeservedly for years now and suddenly when the people rise against her one time she turns it into I’m scared I’m being threatened crap. Can’t take the heat..... can’t do your job.....

  8. Trump is routinely threatened on facebook. I reported it and facebook finally answered and said "the comment is not against commun I type standards." Don't kid yourself, leftists are a violent lot. Antifa come to mind?

  10. There's nut jobs on both sides and no, they shouldn't be tolerated.

8:17 - can't say I've seen threats to Trump on FB, I've seen plenty of bitching about Trump but never threats. If it bothers you, block the friend or better yet, just get off FB.

  11. There should be a criminal investigation against Jackson County. Starting with the assessment division.

  12. ^^ If you haven't seen any threats against Trump, you must not be in the Secret Service. If you don't believe there are any threats against Trump, I suspect you still believe in the Tooth Fairy.

  13. 8:21 then you are lying. Heck, you may be one of them. Why should I have to get off facebook? THEY need to get off. I am keeping track of them and am screenshotting the threats. Where can I send them to you?

  14. This idiot needs to focus on her own town. Trump's not egging on the rebellion, the people who are using this virus against Trump are the ones egging on the rebellion. You liberals are teamed up with the CCP and we all know it.

  15. She's just another small-town political hack who somehow thinks her opinions and comments on state and national issues are of any interest to anyone.
Meanwhile, like the rest of the "Jackson County Democrats", she's surrounded by the terrible results of their own pitiful attempts at "governing" each and every day.
And, unfortunately, so are all the residents who continue to put up with upside-down priorities, irresponsible over-spending, endless press conferences and selfies, and looking out for insiders, friends, and campaign contributors.
How about addressing the horrendous violence and homicide rate in KCMO?
The cow town's number of homicides is well on its way for equaling fully HALF that of New York City, which has a population 17 times as large as KCMO.

  16. ^^and you @9:25AM-you're just another pants-shitting geezer with no life who somehow thinks your opinions on a blog for dying geriatrics are of any interest to anyone.

  17. Although she is correct, shouldn't she be more worried about prosecuting murderers in her own jurisdiction? If I was going to make such a stupid comment on line, I would go do it in a KCMO library so I would be in her jurisdiction if caught. She is a complete idiot and loser and a supremely crappy prosecutor. If actual thug warriors can get away with MURDER in her jurisdiction - keyboard warriors surely can get get away with a tweet.

  19. No one is really talking about it, but Mean Jean has a republican challenger in 2020. A female minority with experience.

  20. Why do we even have a prosecutor if most criminals get probation? Even a minority could do that. Jean Petersucker Baker is as worthless as teats on a boar.

  25. ^^^ yup, Tracey Chappell is her name and excuses are her game. What is it with women Jackson county prosecutors and letting criminals and murderers off the hook. Get a man back in the office and watch the criminals go to jail like they should be.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Women tend to think that humans are incapable of extremely horrible acts, so they tend to go easier on monsters. They obviously didn't go to elementary school with some of the "Charles Mansons" that I did.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Republican Tracey Chappell actually wants to focus on criminal justice reform and reduce mass incarceration dealing with the mentally ill and low-level offenses like DWS, so that law enforcement and the prosecutors can focus on putting violent offenders in jail. The Prosecutors and KCPD spend more time writing/prosecuting traffic tickets than solving murders, rapes, etc. because of the current prosecutor's priorities. What's hilarious is that Jean is now repeating Tracey's priorities on criminal justice reform. Jean put out a press release on June 1st about the need for criminal justice reform.

Tracey also seems to want to make sure taxpayers dollars are being spent appropriately, starting with auditing the Prosecutor's Office, COMBAT, Dart, etc. When is the last time there has been a real audit of the Prosecutor's Office? Of course Democratic Auditor Nicole Galloway is going to tread lightly when looking at the Prosecutor's Office. Check out Tracey Chappell at www.traceychappell.com. In 20202, Jackson County can't be insane and keep Jean "Do Nothing Democrat" Peters Baker in office. Unsolved murders will continue to increase.
