Coronavirus Kills Clean Missouri

The Missouri GOP Super Majority are moving quickly to put down a citizen initiative vote that approved overwhelmingly . . . This power play earns a lot of attention among progressive circles but hasn't managed to gain much traction in the mainstream given that the sausage-making of Democracy doesn't provide good visuals.

Here's a report form across the pond that offers a comprehensive roundup:

Missouri Republicans on the verge of gutting gerrymandering reform

In the middle of the Covid-19 pandemic, Missouri Republicans are seeking to undo a recent effort to make electoral districts in the state legislature more fair. Lawmakers are trying to gut a referendum voters embraced in 2018 that sought to prevent excessive gerrymandering, a process of manipulating electoral maps that Republicans have used to gain advantages throughout the country this decade.

    1. WTF does that have to do with the fact that the GOP can only stay in power with intense gerrymandering and other vote suppression?

  3. Don’t worry. Voters will approve the measure to undo the laws on mapping just because they never understand what they’re voting for anyway. They just ask their friends the day of voting and will have taken no time to investigate or understand what is being voted on. They just want to get the “I voted” sticker. Jeez!

  4. It isn't Coronavirus that will kill "Clean Missouri", its Republican Desperation. Their gerrymandering will end, the question is will it end next year with a restoration of voter equality or will it end in five years with voter equality and the complete collapse of the Republican Party?

  9. Gerrymanderying means creating contrived district borders to suppress democracy and increase the political power of the party in power. It means using law to create massive vote fraud. The GOP uses gerrymandering to stay in power.

  10. ^^^^ Like in Missouri, where 43% of the Voters (all rural), control 67% of the State Elective Offices.

Google "Project Redmap" if you're interested in how this came about.

  11. This law only switches from old style gerrymandering to new style gerrymandering. I've seen some potential district boundaries and they are far, far more extreme compared to current boundaries. Right now the only gerrymandered districts are two, one in Kansas City and one in St. Louis. They are structured in such an odd fashion to guarantee that Missouri's two black congressmen are reelected - Clay in St. Louis and Cleaver in Kansas City.

The law needs to be rescinded or ignored. Either option is fine.
