Jackson County Democrats: Safety in Voting

We have heard from many who are concerned over the safety of the June 2nd election. Many have asked us about absentee ballots or vote by mail. Keep in mind, here in MO we have to have an approved excuse to vote absentee.

It has come to our attention that the Jackson County Election Board DOES NOT believe that requesting an absentee ballot to reduce the risk of exposure to COVID-19, especially for our vulnerable population, is a valid excuse . . . They have said this even though one of the approved excuses the state does allow for absentee voting is “Incapacity or confinement due to illness or physical disability, including a person who is primarily responsible for the physical care of a person who is incapacitated or confined due to illness or disability”.

We are currently, and will still be under some restrictions on election day June 2nd, under a stay-at-home order, which is confinement due to illness. The rule doesn’t specify an illness or who has the illness, the SOS is leaving that up to the individual election boards and courts to interpret - but JCEB commissioners have declined to change their rules. That is why we are writing this to you today -- we need YOU to contact GOVERNOR MIKE PARSON, SECRETARY OF STATE JAY ASHCROFT, and YOUR STATE SENATOR AND STATE REPRESENTATIVE to request that they allow us to vote absentee for both our safety and those in our community and we should be allowed to do so without needing to have the ballot notarized. Other election boards around the state, including KCMO, already are allowing COVID-19 to be a reason to vote absentee. We also need to be allowed to return our ballots without a notary - something almost impossible to obtain for those who are concerned about spreading COVID-19.

CALL TO ACTION

Call, Write an email, or submit a letter to Governor Mike Parson, Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft AND your Missouri State Senator and Representative, explaining that we should be allowed to vote absentee and do so WITHOUT the need to find a notary to notarize the ballot.

Missouri Secretary of State - Jay Ashcroft - (573) 751-2301 or by email at elections@sos.mo.gov

  1. They're absolutely right. As REPUBLICAN in Kansas I will tell you that there is not reason that we should not be able to request mail in ballots and follow the proper protocol to do so. It is not a privilege, it's a right.

    1. Our President Trump said it best. It's funny that democrats always seem to do better in mail in elections. Funny, indeed.

    2. Call off all elections. Just let Trump pick the winners for us. Seems like what he wants.

  2. Let people vote without gathering in big groups. Should be simple.

  3. What a gang of assholes on the election board! If I'm already sick I can mail in but not if I have a good chance of getting sick in a pandemic??? 40 people are known to have caught CV19 in Wisconsin when Fuckheads Biden & the DNC forced the primary election.

  4. Get in line 6 feet apart. Have hand santizer available and wipe machine between votes. We have worked through the whole shutdown because we make electronic components for medical and military suppliers. Little more work, sure, doable absolutely! Not that fucking hard people.

    1. So weird that all you need is a statement that a dead person is really only sick but it almost never happens except inside authoritarian winger voter suppression fantasies.

  6. Should have had this settled a month ago. It'll be harder to convince people that this is important after the quarantines are limited.

    1. Vote suppression is vote fraud. You are advocating for thousands of vote frauds by suppression. You are a fraud who just wants to maintain right wing minority rule.

Easy fix, enforce the lock down FOREVER. Never leave the house again and have your votes cast for you. Think of the convenience!

  8. You only have 5 to 10 per cent turnout on primary elections. So Jackson County is handling this correctly. I never have been in a line on a primary or school board election.

  10. If we can have stores opened here and there for things handling an election in person should be no big deal at all.

Way I see it, if Home Depot and Lowes can be open so can the polls.
